Historia
In poyums, Len Pennie has created a collection that is as approachable as it is affecting; whether she's writing letters to her younger self, advocating for women's rights or adapting fairy tales to process an abusive relationship, Len's voice is bold, unashamedly frank and unmistakeably hers. She consciously fuses Scots into her poetry, cleverly ensuring that it is accessible to speakers of both languages.

I’m completely entirely enthralled
Revisado: 03-08-24
Loved this entire book. The text itself, and the audio delivery. 10/10 recommend. I’ve been a fan of Len’s Scots Word of the Day for a few years. Love the accessibility of Scots given here. Love that this collection opens insights into Len’s (and many other women’s) lived experience, in a way that drives home the point. Total respect!

Historia
It is 1547, and Scotland has been humiliated by an English invasion and is threatened by machinations elsewhere beyond its borders, but it is still free. Paradoxically, her freedom may depend on a man who stands accused of treason. He is Francis Crawford of Lymond, a scapegrace nobleman of crooked felicities and murderous talents, possessed of a scholar's erudition and a tongue as wicked as a rapier. In The Game of Kings, this extraordinary antihero returns to the country that has outlawed him to redeem his reputations even at the risk of his life.

Holy Moly, I am HOOKED!
Revisado: 04-11-23
I will admit this could have been a DNF because initially I couldn’t keep straight who anyone was. I don’t have the basic understanding of that century of Scotland’s history so the expositions about the politics kept losing me. But other reviewers were glowing and gushing praise, so I persisted. My primary learning method is reading to myself but I spend so much time sat on my butt doing that for work and devotions, that I’d get nothing done if I was also reading for pleasure. So I’ve embraced audio books for fiction. Long about 1/2 to 2/3 in I was just starting to grasp something of the complicated relationships of the important characters and had begun to love them all. So…. I started over, and made sure to only be listening when the tasks were automatic and required zero concentration— dishes, housework, etc. and for part of the time I’m driving for work, on my return home when I could put aside the distraction of the job because that’s my time now, without feeling guilty. I’m ready to download the next book in the series and start listening right away! Dorothy is a phenomenal writer, the characters come through in their dialog so well, the Scottishisms in the descriptions delighted me! I can’t wait to hear what happens next!

Historia
It all starts on New Year's Eve. A night that has to be a success, whatever the cost. For Joni and her friends, it'll be a party that promises all the high stakes and glamour of any other, but by sunrise, they'll be dealing with something darker than the usual post-party comedown. Not that they let this stand in their way. For this is their year to revel in all that the playground of London has to offer: sneaking into places they shouldn't, breaking every rule, falling in love with the wrong people. All the while avoiding one undeniable truth: it's not if the party ends, it's how.

Will read whatever you wrote next, Nell!

I’m not sure I’m even in the neighborhood for the target audience for this book, but I have enjoyed Nell’s performances in Victoria as the Queen’s Dresser, Nancy, and as Laoghaire MacKenzie in Outlander so much that I decided to buy this book. Creative people often excel in more than their primary mediums and Nell sure did here. I felt let into a world of a younger generation denied by my membership in the Boomer generation. I was definitely not ever part of a group of similar close friends like this even in my youth. She made me understand what it’s like to make a close knit family of a bunch of friends all in the same general stage of life.
As the story unfolds, what happens at the end of the book seemed to me so likely to happen… Nell did a terrific job of having her first person main character tell the story in a way the audience can see something coming and yet believe the character does not. Just like real life, when we’re too close to the situation we can be so blind to it!
Great first book, looking forward to her next!
