Teenage outcast's fantasy in novel form

The poor, misunderstood misfit has secret superpowers that let him save the world. All the kids who picked on him will be sorry! The girl who left him will definitely realise how secretly cool and heroic he is and then want to have sex with him! The grownups just don't understand, but they'll have no choice but to bow down before the hero's awesome coolness!

Ugh. I'm glad I didn't spend money on this trash. Too bad I'll never get back the time I wasted with this.

There is a chance this could have been an interesting story in the hands of a better writer, but Rainer Rey is not a good writer. The descriptions read like stage directions from a middle school drama class. The dialogue was tedious. The characters were a mix of teenage boy fantasies and flat stereotypes.

If that wasn't bad enough, everything is soaked in racism, sexism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and narrow-minded hatefulness.

The author seems to be working through some serious issues of inadequacy. This book is so disgustingly racist, mysoginistic, and colonialist that I couldn't finish. Every character who is a member of the American or British military is described like a god; anyone else is pathetic scum. There is no redeeming quality of the writing: ad dialogue, repetetive action, trite descriptions. It's definitely worth what I paid for it, which was nothing.

The heroine is a textbook Mary Sue; the dialogue is atrocious; the very thin plot reads like a 12 year old's school assignment; the only redeeming quality was that this was short.

The narrator was bad but not the worst I've heard.

I could not finish because I hated these insufferable characters. The writing is terrible. Everything is a trope from a bad porn film.

The narrators were fine, but I'm sorry they wasted their time on this dreck.

A thoroughly unlikable main character who rapes a 13 year old girl and brushes it off as "oops, I guess that was marginally unacceptable."

This book has no redeeming qualities. Obnoxious characters, no real plot, trite dialogue, physical and sexual abuse treated like foreplay, and did I mention the obnoxious characters?

Even listening on 1.25 speed, the narrator dragged. Susannah Jones may be a good reader when presented with good material, but this isn't it.

How do I get my money back from Audible?

I wasn't expecting much from this story, but I definitely expected consent. The main character coerces women to join his "feed harem" by threatening them with death or hell if they don't agree. When they are in the harem, he forces them to have sex with each other as punishment, despite sexual preference or physical exhaustion.

The other plotline (a member of the harem creates a Robin Hood style troupe of kick-ass supernatural women) had the potential to be interesting and fun. But every time the characters start doing anything, the main character interrupts them to demand sex.

And they're not even good sex scenes!

The author is still stuck on the idea that anyone outside the military is useless, helpless, or complicit. This is a theme I've noticed in several of his books, and it's getting really tiresome. Military personnel are infinitely capable and almost always heroic. Police and fire fighters are acceptable stopgaps if the military needs more bodies. Everyone else is completely ignorant, selfish, cowardly, weak, or all of the above.

Women in the military, if they even exist in Nicholas Smith's books, are adequate computer technicians (nothing too complicated, leave the real IT to the menfolk), medics (usually nurses or so specialized as to be useless), subordinate scientists, or secretaries. Inevitably, they will need rescuing and cost precious resources. Civilian women can do nothing but cry over their broken nails.

When the characters are so flat and predictable, the plot becomes pretty flat and predictable as well.

This story had the potential to be really interesting, but it is ruined absolutely awful writing. Not only is everything reduced to awkward exposition, but that exposition is then repeated over and over again. The main character could have been sympathetic, well-rounded, demonstrating growth and development... but the author keeps stepping in to slap the reader with an explanation of why he is sympathetic and well-rounded and then to spell out all the ways his outlook has changed. And it didn't actually change. The moral awakening or whatever you want to call it happens before the book even starts.

Ellis Park has a lovely voice, though. To be honest, listening to him speak was the only reason I finished this book. I put it on in the background while working or driving so I could hear his voice without having to listen to the story.
