Historia
White Americans have long been comfortable in the assumption that they are the cultural norm. Now that notion is being challenged, as white people wrestle with what it means to be part of a fast-changing, truly multicultural nation. Facing chronic economic insecurity, a popular culture that reflects the nation's diverse cultural reality, and a future in which they will no longer constitute the majority of the population, and with a black president in the White House, whites are growing anxious.

Its a wonderful experience when an author/researcher lays out information with which one is familiar and then challenges to a new reveal.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Book Evolves Strangely
Revisado: 06-09-22
Had I known the author's ultimate conclusions I likely would have been interested. And, bought the TWO books. Author's history lesson is full of valuable information... possibly as selective as others I've read...but entirely thought provoking. Wish I had 100+ years to see how sapiens play out. Of course, we may not be sapiens by then.

Historia
Everyone needs to love and be loved - even men. But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are - whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Historia
In an era of hardening religious attitudes and explosive religious violence, this book offers a welcome antidote. Richard Holloway retells the entire history of religion - from the dawn of religious belief to the 21st century - with deepest respect and a keen commitment to accuracy. Writing for those with faith and those without, and especially for young listeners, he encourages curiosity and tolerance, accentuates nuance and mystery and calmly restores a sense of the value of faith.

Dying of Whiteness
Revisado: 07-18-19
It's first.. I hope among many others to start the analysis of holding people in check hurts the "holder".
Biology, Anthropology, History of Civilizations, Genetics, and more, have determined, when free of most social bias, that humans are much like one another, with the same capacities..
If whiteness was absolutely superior no civil law would ever have been necessary to preserve the fact.
Certainly, hurting oneself in order to preserve an artificial construct is beyond reason.
A good read..

Historia
At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

Messing with the Enemy
Revisado: 06-18-18
Very thought provoking. Interesting recap of the start of the influence of digital media...long before most of us would have believed. Clearly, as individuals and as a country we are unprepared for the effects, the potency and the social restructuring likely with this 'instant' technology.
What is equally interesting is that based upon the author's premise I think we would sacrifice our collective principles for immediate social/psychological gains. Once that cat is out of the bag we are ripe to 'fall for' whomever has manipulative skills. Oh wait..wasn't that always true..just happens instantly now. No need to buy me dinner!

Enormous amount of facts for readers who would seek out additional corroborating information. Plain language encourages plain understanding. No doubt. by design Comey's delivery and word use give a feeling of authenticity. If fundamentally true the US is in for a rough ride.

The New Jim Crow
Revisado: 03-13-17
An extraordinary work of analysis that does not short change the totality of US racial history while revealing the complexity of our recent 40 to 50 years right up and through the Obama years. We, students of history, have been aware that power re-invents itself as necessary in order to maintain itself yet too often understanding the means by which that occurs required a long wordy treatment. Alexander's contribution to my learning is a succinct e-opening nuanced education of times that I have lived through. I did not sleep through. I was alert and even participated.
Giving due respect to such thinkers as ML King, DuBois, Baldwin, others...she challenges us to acknowledge our limitations, to re-think what our results have been and I dare say to get out of the way ....
