Now I remember why I don't read short stories

I love Madeline Miller's work, and will read Circe next, but this one reminds me why I don't read short stories. I needed something to keep me company on a lunchtime walk and didn't want to start anything long, since I'm also reading 3 different books between Kindle and physical. This was less than 45 minutes.

The story was good, and I don't know much about Ancient Greece, but I didn't like the ending (though it made sense).

A twisty tale of time travel and two women who must save each other–no matter the cost. Annie has always had high hopes for her future. But the reality of her life just isn’t measuring up. She thinks she loves her fiancé, Greg, and he's paying her tuition to get her degree. But things don't always work the way they are planned. Greg has anger issues, and he's not supportive of her opening a business.

Then, a strange old woman shows up outside her house, and she seems to know a lot about Annie. Too much. Greg wants to call the cops and have her dragged away, but there’s something about her Annie just can’t shake.

WWII historical fiction set in the US

So often I read historical fiction about WWII that takes place in Europe. This is the first I read that took place in the US.

1941, a year before the US entered the war, 24-year-old Jessie is a talented pilot. Her father taught her and her twin brother to fly, and when her brother joins the RAF, she joins the civilian flight school in her small Texas town and begins to clandestinely train British pilots for the RAF. But the task of instructor isn't without its own perils of near-misses and death.

The novel also follows Rhonda, who trains the RAF pilots in the flight simulator. Fearing little, she dares to jeopardize everything for a forbidden relationship with a charismatic airman.
And then there is Kitty, Jessie's 16-year-old sister, who adores dancing with these charming British pilots, realizing too late the risks they pose to her heart.

By the end, this book had me in tears. But I was also so angry at the attitude of Americans who were so against helping Britain yet after Pearl Harbor, they 180'd so fast it made heads spin. The self-centered hypocrisy!

A softer book than the first three, it's not as much about the science of space flight or building a habitat that can be home to humanity if the Earth cannot recover from the meteor strike as it is a character driven novel. We learn more about Elma and Nathaniel, as they weather the issues that Mars throws at them. There is a mystery as well... something happened on the first Mars mission, and everyone who knows about it is keeping it from Elma.

A nice addition to the series.

Thrilling Farscape-esque adventure

During the maiden voyage of a warp engine, Major Noah Gantz is flung across the universe. Rescued by the sentient starship Kayan, Noah's life is saved through bio-integration, granting him enhanced abilities and Kayan's voice in his mind. Stranded, Noah must adapt to this alien reality, while facing a powerful, Earth-aware enemy seeking to capture him and Kayan.

I enjoyed the narration, and it really made all the characters, especially Kayan (pronounced like the pepper) come alive.

Homeworld Lost delivers a thrilling 'Farscape'-esque adventure, dropping a gung-ho pilot, Noah, into a strange universe. He joins a quirky crew: the sentient, vulnerable ship Kayan; the stoic, alien captain Montow; and the eager, camera-eyed Walen, Grum. The intricate, challenging plot unfolds with gradual reveals as they flee a pursuing enemy. Humorous cultural misunderstandings and the charming pet, Scratch, add to the enjoyment. This is a detailed, engaging space opera where nothing comes easy.

If you like stories of redemption, finding out what you are made of and what you can accomplish, you'll love this.

I went into this novel blind because I downloaded it months ago, and by the time I started it last week, I'd forgotten what it was about. Loved it!

I've listened to most of Jeremy Robinson's novels on audio book and RC Bray's narration is one of the reasons why. It's produced so well!

The story behind this one is the escaped-lab-expriment-gone-wrong, now reveared as a goodess, Nemesis, has been picking off bad guys for 13 years... sometimes destroying whole cities to get to them. This has most of the word turning over a new leaf. Crime is down all over the world, except for the hard core. Those, the NCO feeds to the giant kaiju monster.

The whole system is barbaric, and this book has more blood, guts, and gore in it than I expected (though I don't know why). Well written, but not really my type of story. Still, an entertaining listen while out walking, driving, or running errands.

I love a good climate crisis book, and I'm cool with preaching about the environment and how the climate criminals screwed up the planet... so while other's might call this style preachy, I don't. It's put forth as a school project that 16-year-old Emi is doing, so we get it in bits and pieces as she submits parts of the project to her teacher.

A twisty-turny plot of galactic politics

A twisty-turny plot of galactic politics, betrayal and murder, but will love win in the end?

As a character driven novel, I have to say that I loved both Prince Kiem (royal playboy) and Count Jainan (softspoken and brilliant, but with deep emotional scars). Married to form a political alliance between two planets and renew a treaty, Kiem is reluctant in the relationship because Jainan has just lost his partner. Jainan is reluctant because he thinks Prince Kiem doesn't like him. Miscommunication abounds until they wind up trying to solve the murder of Jainan's partner, Taam, and wind up in some tricky situations.

The plot is fast-paced and interesting, a winter world setting, some decent tech, and a deep secret to be uncovered.

Triggers: domestic abuse, anxiety/PTSD

This was 3.5 stars for me. This was a tough book. It had gruesome, vividly described murders that should have trigger warnings.
Good time travel is very hard to write, and this one was confusing, which means it was more complicated than I would prefer, but with one piece of the plot that was overly clear. Each time Shannon goes to the future to save the world from ending as a white hole eats Earth, she makes it worse. That was too easy to figure out.

The narrator was 5 stars, bravo!
