Historia
When Freddie Mercury died in 1991, aged just 45, the world was rocked by the vibrant and flamboyant star's tragic secret that he had been battling AIDS. That Mercury had even been diagnosed came as a shock to his millions of fans, with his announcement coming less than 24 hours before his death. In Somebody to Love, biographers Mark Langthorne and Matt Richards skilfully weave Freddie Mercury's incredible pursuit of musical greatness with Queen, his upbringing and his endless search for love with the story of a terrible disease.

Simplified Freddie
Revisado: 05-20-19
Freddie Mercury was more than a gay man. He was more than a man with HIV. But this book focuses so much on these two facts and fails to delve deeply into Freddie Mercury, the PERSON. Nothing in this book was entirely new: all the information could be gleamed from scouring Wikipedia.
Most annoying was the constant insets of the history of HIV. One isn't exactly sure what the point of this is, as HIV is ubiquitous enough that people who read books should have a basic understanding of it. Was the purpose to "absolve" Freddie - though he hardly need absolution? But then again, the book focuses so much on Freddie's sexual conquests that it hardly seems to be the case. That is another thing that irks me - how much is focussed on "promiscuity", again without delving deeper into what lies beneath this.
The authors call out homophobia, but the book is itself full of subtle homophobia - going so far as "blaming" Mercury's gayness on his being sent to an all-boys' boarding school.
The history of discography is great, and the details of Queen's development really proves once again what a magnificent band they were. A suggestion is to listen to Queen's music in between reading the book - it really adds something quite special.
Right near the end of the book, the authors manage to shed some light on Freddie, the person; but it seems a little too late. The last quarter of the book is certainly the best, and I'm happy I persevered to get there.

Good for laypersons and scientists
Revisado: 05-20-19
As an MD, I was interested in seeing just how accessible the information in this performance would be to both the clinical and the layperson audience. I found it to be well-researched, and accessible. It wasn't over-simplified, but it was explained well enough for anyone with a basic knowledge of contact sports and the brain to enjoy it. I haven't been a huge fan of the free audible originals, but this was captivating. Also a good narrator, when non-fiction is so often poorly narrated.

Exceeds expectations
Revisado: 03-09-19
I'm generally afraid of classics and had been warned about this one, because of the "pages and pages" of fish names. Well, I loved it. My love of the sea was reignited, and the descriptions were evocative. After finishing this, I went to the bookshop to buy a physical copy too. It's one of my favourite books now.

Fantastic, current, apt
Revisado: 03-09-19
This book is wonderful. I think it's meant to be middle grade but I think it can be enjoyed by anyone. The topic is current and with all the fake news out there, this presents views that are important to be seen. The voice actors are great, and the plot is well-paced. I found it interesting how in the end, you realise that there are connections between the three main characters, although that did feel a little forced. Not enough to ruin a great book, though.

Complex futuristic action drama
Revisado: 03-09-19
This was a twisty, fast-paced novel. I think it is a bit niche, because you really have to be willing to understand quite a lot of the science to get truly invested in the story. My dad, who listened with me, actually felt that it was TOO futuristic, but I loved that. I struggled a bit to get used to the narrator at the beginning, but soon got into it.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

I want to read it again
Revisado: 11-10-18
I've been recommended this book so often, I fully expected it to be overhyped. Boy, was I wrong.
I loved getting to know all the voices. I loved the dynamic between the family. I was a bit disappointed that the father was so unidimensional, so obviously "bad", with little redeeming features. It was easy to hate him.
The narrator reads a bit fast, but I could get used to it easily enough.
The book haunts me - and although I typically do not re-read, I am keen to re-read this.

So-so
Revisado: 11-10-18
It's an interesting enough premise, although I think that it was more of a biography of growing up in an interesting time, and the library was really just a setting, rather than playing a central role in the narrative. Not my favourite this year.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Revisado: 11-10-18
Not having enjoyed Pride and Prejudice, Emma was to be my last attempt at Jane Austen. How happy I am that I tried! I really enjoyed Emma and her friends. The production is lovely, the voice artists talented, and the special effects add a little bit of magic. Highly recommended.

Current, relevant, sensitive
Revisado: 07-21-18
I don't know if Sekaran knew that her novel would become so relevant, but I read this during the "zero tolerance" saga of separating children from their undocumented parents at the US-Mexican border.
The story is written in alternating viewpoints, and both written and performed so well that it is easy to distinguish the two voices. It almost read like chick-lit, and there's nothing bad about it: it seems real enough to touch, the humour is laugh-out-loud funny, and the relationships are sweet.
The conclusion is conflicting, which I think was the intention. How can we say which side is the right one?
I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a garment factory burns to the ground, claiming the lives of hundreds of workers, mostly young women. Amid the rubble a bystander captures a heart-stopping image - a teenage girl lying in the dirt, her body broken by a multi-tory fall, and over her mouth a mask of fabric bearing the label of one of America's largest retailers, Presto Omnishops Corporation. When the photo goes viral, it fans the flames of a decades-old controversy about sweatshops, labor rights, and the ethics of globalization.

Current, relevant read
Revisado: 07-20-18
At the beginning I wasn't sure if this was fiction, because it seemed so real. I suppose that's because this novel IS real, even if the characters are fictionalised. There is no pretty ending, and it ended up making me feel pretty impotent - but it was a magnificent read. I highly recommend it.
