Historia
In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died. Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling. By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal - or harm - on a whim. But of course those were only stories.

Why can't this narrator google pronunciations?
Revisado: 01-01-23
I really enjoyed the story and the progression of the story to its climax and then it's conclusion. The narrator is a different story. She sounds perpetually breathless and doesn't research the pronunciation of words. AGA cooker is not pronounced as three separate letters but AH-GAH. That was the worst example but there a many other examples in the book and in others she's narrated. Google them for goodness sakes instead of winging it. BTW, I'm not British but American and even I know the correct pronunciation.

I loved the story and it's unfolding. The pacing was perfect, and I hated to hear it end.

Not good at all.
Revisado: 12-18-18
I remember when I read the first book in the series and having the same reaction to the narrator's accent. It's awful, jarring and what's worse is that the narrator must be from the UK or Australia. She pronounces the 'a' at the end of a name or word as 'er'. If the narrator was trying to speak with an accent from the US south she must have realized that she was doing it wrong. I finished the first book in the series because I thought the story was pretty good and I liked the main character. But this time the book doesn't even have a good storyline to it's credit. I really disliked the sister, and the village policeman. I like the premise of the story but I find myself unable to finish listening to the book.

Historia
A working stargate dating back more than 10,000 years has been discovered in North Dakota, on a Sioux reservation near Devils Lake. Travel through the gate currently leads to three equally mysterious destinations: (1) an apparently empty garden world, quickly dubbed Eden; (2) a strange maze of underground passageways; and (3) a space station with a view of a galaxy that appears to be the Milky Way.

So, So story and awful narration.
Revisado: 01-22-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I was often pulled out of the story thinking that the way a character acted was all wrong. Most of the time people seemed half witted, there wasn't a diversity between how the characters were written.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jack McDevitt? Why or why not?
I normally read everything Jack McDevitt writes, so yes, I will read the next book especially if it's an Alex and Chase story.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin R. Free’s performances?
No!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Nope

Loved These Books When I Read Them, But Listening
Revisado: 04-22-14
What made the experience of listening to Aunt Dimity and the Duke the most enjoyable?
Having read, and reread, these books they were cozy and familiar and I enjoyed that experience.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Aunt Dimity and the Duke?
Loved the interactions with the children and those they cared about whether it was between the Duke when he was a child and Aunt Dimity, or the sister and brother in present times.
What didn’t you like about Teri Clark Linden’s performance?
I heartily disliked her pronunciation of 'a'. Sometimes she said it as a long 'a', which I hate, or she said it as the softer more inconspicuous 'a' (ah). It dragged me out of the story every single time she used the long 'a' pronunciation. Small thing to some, but it annoyed me.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No.
Any additional comments?
I bought a number of the titles, when they were on sale and before I listened to any of them. If the narrator has continued with the short 'a'/long 'a' change up I'm going to be mighty disappointed.

For Me This Was Unlistenable
Revisado: 09-04-13
Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?
I have read, or listened to, Maggie Shayne's books before, but not the other authors. The stories are all formulaic Romance/Paranormal and maybe I haven't read enough lately, except the excellent Jayne Castle, to be able to stomach them. I found myself rolling my eyes way too much. So it's doubtful that I'd listen to or read anything else by these authors. Wanting to get my money's worth, I read a third to half of each book before stopping completely.
Has Heart of Darkness turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I'll still continue to read other paranormal books by Jayne Castle, and the upcoming trilogy by Nora Roberts, and also Molly Harper, etc.
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, the narrators helped me understand who was speaking, but that didn't help with my overall negative experience
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment was my main reaction. I thought this would be a fun listen and didn't expect this book to be so old fashioned. The first book was especially cringe worthy.
