Historia
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not by Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.

Truth and suffering
Revisado: 12-03-24
This is an astute observation of the “soft totalitarianism” that is permeating lots of Western culture today with excellent parallels drawn to the past. It also reminds Christians that suffering often becomes a pathway to peace and freedom, which is something that some Christians today do not like to acknowledge. Excellent reminder rooted in Truth and historical examples of real people who put their lives on the line for Christ.

Fun ride
Revisado: 02-21-24
The story was a fun ride and it kept me wanting to hear more about the characters’ lives. The vocal artists’ performances were consistent and easy to listen to except when one of the females consistently pronounced especially as “ekspecially” and when one of the males continually gave a lisp and a valley-girl esque caricature whenever he did female voices—something that I found quite distracting. Overall, I loved it.

Historia
Eli Frieden lives in the most perfect town in the world: Serenity, New Mexico. In this idyllic place, every lawn is perfectly manicured, and everyone has a pool and a tree house. Honesty and integrity are valued above all else. The 30 kids who live there never lie--they know it's a short leap from that to the awful problems of other, less fortunate places. Then one day Eli bikes to the edge of the city limits, and something so crazy and unexpected happens, it changes everything.

Great story; great narration
Revisado: 02-09-24
I loved the narration overall, but one of the male readers always gave the girl characters a lisp as if he was impersonating a comical caricature of a gay man. That didn’t make any sense as a character choice and was irritating to hear. One other thing was the way a female narrator pronounced the word “especially” incorrectly. She said, “ek-specially”, which was also irritating to listen to, especially since she was supposed to be a genius. Other than that, I loved the story and the narrators, who sounded great on the whole and the story drew me in.

Hard to finish
Revisado: 02-18-23
I had to stop listening, not because of the robotic sounding narrator, but because of the graphic carnage strewn throughout the book. It was the first time a book had almost made me vomit—and I’m not easily bothered by blood, etc. it was just the level of twistedness combined with the heartless human and animal torture that got to me. I really wanted to find out if the bad guys were defeated and the victims survived, but I couldn’t bear any more of the horror—it crossed a line for me.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

This is an especially good one of Stephen King’s, with a mixture of kids, suspense, frightening occurrences, horror, and hope. One of my new favorites by King.

Historia
It was only supposed to be a game. In a boring suburb, three lonely men seeking distractions from their monotonous routines get together in an abandoned house to play a macabre game of show-and-tell. Nothing is off-limits in their little circle - anything, no matter how depraved, is welcome...so long as it's frightening. But when one member brings what sounds like an audio recording of an actual murder to a meeting, featuring the tortured screams and pleas of an anonymous woman, the jaded club members find themselves truly rattled.

It drew me in
Revisado: 01-12-22
The story was excellent, but lacked any sense of hope whatsoever. I kept hoping that at least one of the characters would be rescued, but they all basically died of loneliness. It captured my attention, but made me feel bereft of hope in the end. I understand the point: one can’t escape loneliness when it is self-imposed. But I would have loved the hope of at least one character breaking out of it.

Historia
When experienced homicide detective Casey Duncan first moved to the secret town of Rockton, she expected a safe haven for people like her, people running from their past misdeeds and past lives. She knew living in Rockton meant living off the grid completely: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. What she didn't expect is that Rockton comes with its own set of secrets and dangers.

Great
Revisado: 04-07-21
Again, another success! The performance was excellent as usual, as well. The only reason I gave it less than five stars was that the narrator pronounced the Newfoundland breed of dog like “New Finland”, separating it into what sounded like two words. Otherwise loved it!!!

The writer plus the narrator make a great team. The story is engaging and exciting. The narrator is not only accurate, but an excellent performer with good characterizations. I look forward to reading more in this series!

There's no place like home.... Kim and Julian Taylor are in the market for their first home, and a visit to the secluded Beacon estate finds them enamored. It's a peculiar home, rather large and in need of some renovations. The price is right, however, and after a tour, they snap the house up without hesitation. The man who sells them the house has one last detail to share before they sign on the dotted line. The previous owners of the home disappeared under mysterious circumstances nearly eight years ago and have recently been declared dead in absentia.

Excellent story!
Revisado: 03-17-21
Fun, scary romp! I got mad at the husband for being horror character dumb sometimes 😆. For example, they left their house in broad daylight without needing any lights on and locked their doors and were gone all day. When they came home to a house with all the lights on and their back door swinging open, the husband said, “I think someone’s in there.” I wanted to tell him, “Ya think!? Well thank you, Captain Obvious!” But that didn’t distract from the story—it made it more fun because I was engaged with the characters.
As far as the narrator, he did an excellent job with voices and reading. That said, he really needs his pronunciation of a few things checked. For example, he pronounced the word, “draw”, like DRAWL, which was a bit distracting, but that’s just my pronunciation Nazi coming out. Overall, I’d recommend the book—as I said a fun horror story.
