Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Fun for all ages
Revisado: 11-14-24
A young girl and her grandmother go on an adventure in search of mermaids along the barrier islands of Georgia. In particular, they are searching for the mythical Siren's Harbor where all of the mermaids of the world congregate on the Winter Solstice. I enjoyed the escapism of this sweet little fairy tale -- it combines magical realism and themes of family ties in a way that transcends the "young adult fiction" genre and appeals to adults as well.

Look beyond the abstract dates and figures, kings and queens, and battles and wars that make up so many historical accounts. Over the course of 48 richly detailed lectures, Professor Garland covers the breadth and depth of human history from the perspective of the so-called ordinary people, from its earliest beginnings through the Middle Ages.

Long but worth it
Revisado: 10-17-24
I love that this was broken up into a series of lectures, approximately 30 minutes in length each. What could have been overwhelming was broken up into easily digestible bites, and I was able to work this into my schedule whenever I had a half hour or so to listen in. British historian Robert Garland does a great job explaining ancient history from the point of view of the people who lived it; and for the first time ever I was able to consider -- in detail -- what it must have been like to be an ancient Egyptian building a pyramid, or a young Viking warrior landing on the shores of England at night just before an ambush. Highly recommend this to those who have a sketchy or patchwork understanding of history and want to dive deeper in a way that's not too heavy.

Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend.

Well written but I hated it
Revisado: 07-01-24
Gorgeous narration and elegant writing were not enough to save this one for me. Completely depressing subject matter. I don't know how this poor, longsuffering author made it from childhood to adulthood with such a despicable mother. By the midway point of the book I absolutely couldn't stand that woman one minute longer. What a disgusting human being.

This is a beautifully written coming-of-age story set in small town Minnesota in 1961, and at the center of it all is a family that struggles to find the grace of God amidst a series of tragedies. Despite the dark undercurrents in the plot, this was a rewarding read and I recommend it.

I kept waiting for this to “click in” for me but this was a disappointing read. On the surface of things it sounded a bit intriguing— the elderly man isolated during Covid, the mysterious young woman showing up at his door claiming to be a long lost relative. The very ending wrapped up all the loose ends and questions and that was more engaging for me. But overall, I don’t recommend this one.

Historia
A Very Private School offers a clear-eyed, first-hand account of a culture of cruelty at the school Charles Spencer attended in his youth and provides important insights into an antiquated boarding system. Drawing on the memories of many of his schoolboy contemporaries, as well as his own letters and diaries from the time, he reflects on the hopelessness and abandonment he felt at aged eight, viscerally describing the intense pain of homesickness and the appalling inescapability of it all.

A very compelling story
Revisado: 03-28-24
Prior to reading this memoir, my only impressions of Princess Diana's brother were that he was once nicknamed "Champagne Charlie" for his partying ways, and he later gave that unforgettable eulogy which still gives me goosebumps to this day. Things are not always as they seem, and sadly that is the story of his life. It's heartbreaking to think of what this one lost little privileged boy experienced at boarding school, far from the protective eyes of his parents. How brave of him to come forward and shine a light on the crimes experienced by him and others at the Maidwell boarding school. In that sense, this is an uplifting story of empowerment and survival.

Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

A slice of history from the Victorian era, from the angle of Prince Albert, his life and times. It was well written and narrated, and the pacing was on point. This was an enjoyable escape.

Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Incredible story
Revisado: 02-20-24
Incredible story that all began with an old, worn out photograph of the author's father and a nameless buddy, taken when they were Marines at Okinawa during World War II. The author embarked on an epic journey to find out the identity of the mystery soldier, and to bring him home for burial at Arlington. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommend.

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

It's been a long time since I've heard anything on Audible that made everything around me stop. I was never that interested in the Theranos scandal, but this re-telling by the whistleblower, Tyler Schultz, had me on the edge of my seat. Good, old-fashioned storytelling at its finest. Highly recommend!
