Extremely Entertaining
Revisado: 10-04-23
To begin, I'll say the narration alone is a reason to pick up this book. there's a vivacity and commitment to character and tone on display in this performance that will keep you hooked from the introduction on.
The story was well ahead of its time when originally conceived and now painstakingly brought to life in an ideal medium. Fun, true fun was penned to the page and the result is a time capsule/love letter to a time, people and comedy style we don't see much of these days.
The book has Dragons and celebrities being called up on to perform the role of Nights. you know what you're getting and you'll be very happy to get it.

Historia
As Chris’s home life deteriorates and he descends into an abyss, he’s showing up for high school finals so high he can’t even remember his locker combination. While other kids are having Thanksgiving dinner, Chris is chasing his drunk mom down the sidewalk of a strip mall, trying to take her to rehab. He’s winning a cruise to the Bahamas, drinking and pretending to be in his twenties to hook up with someone much older. Bad decisions and misadventures abound when Chris tries his best to be “normal” having no idea how.

Equal parts nostalgia, memoir and hope.
Revisado: 09-15-23
Chris details an incredible account of cutting a path in life despite being provided a cracked foundation and all the constant struggle of being inundated by the reality of having an alcoholic parent.
For those of a certain age, the detail of music listened to in cars and the various goings in of high school in the 90s vividly sets a scene to allow the writing to live and breathe as a musing on a past drought with bad decisions and testing boundaries. it's heartbreaking and real and raw and worth anyone's time.
Chris does a great job narrating the story of his life. There's a baked in grounding to the events of his life as told by him.
Even, perhaps especially, if nothing like this has happened to you it's worth understanding. I strongly recommend giving the book a listen.

The House on Harlan is a thrilling masterpiece in horror that takes some truly unexpected and subgenre-hopping turns and develops an entirely new layer of Salt's growing literary universe. A family-centered story with tons of heart, even more blood, and a shocking new take on some of our favorite folklores, this is one you won't want to miss.

Did not see it coming
Revisado: 09-09-23
Early into the story, those cozy moments peppered with enough unease to let you know you're in horror country, I had this story pegged as something akin to Hill House. I was wrong. very wrong. I'm so happy that I was. There is an almost complete tonal upheaval in the last third of the story that made it very unique in the space of horror and it's truly worth anyone's time.
Curtis Michael Holland sweeps you into a comfortable world and masterfully delivers those uneasy moments to keep you on your toes until the big shoe drops. It's very apparent that Curtis is a student of horror and is well aware of how to deliver what fans are after in a performance.

Rob has hit rock bottom. After losing his son five years ago, he's lost everything else too—his wife, his job, and his home. His days are now filled with nothing but the bottom of an alcohol bottle and self-loathing. But when he's offered a chance to see his son again, he'll do anything to take it. The catch? He has to damn an innocent life to eternity in hell.

A compelling mix of what makes horror work.
Revisado: 09-05-23
It's reductive, but effective, to call this novella equal parts Butterfly Effect, Pet Semetary and American Werewolf. Elements of each of those stories are woven together here to deliver a grounded and gut wrenching tale of how far you'd be willing to go to see a loved one again. I empathized with motives, was surprised by genuine turns and left the story feeling like I'd been in the mind of someone who truly understands that horror is born and fermented in the mind.
Curtis Michael Holland has emerged as one of my favorite narrators and his engaging delivery elevates this story to allow it to envelop the mind. Sure, you'll see a thing or two coming, but just because you know a roller coaster ends where it begins, it doesn't stop you from taking the ride.

Any fan of a Halloween story anthology in the vein of Trick R Treat will get a kick out of this collection. Some of the stories are incredibly unique while others delight in wearing nods to popular Halloween movies/shows of new and old on their sleeve. All in all, the narration sells that Halloween feeling and the sum of it's parts feels like a triple feature of fun.

Rarely do you find a romance so effortlessly woven into the story of someone tasked with helping a best friend usher in a new phase of life. I won't spoil anything, but I will say the book is smartly written with successful attempts to combine humor and earnest character development in equal measure. The narration effortlessly brings the characters to life and you will undoubtedly be charmed by the flawless execution of humor.

This book is cleverly written and narrated to address dementia and understanding the implications for a child who will have a difficult time processing. I highly recommend this listen for any families who have a family member afflicted with dementia. It takes time to not just explain dementia, but also how to celebrate and remember a life.

Engaging Horror/Thriller

The story wears an influence of Salem's Lot right on its sleeve and the resulting small town afflicted by an evil story feels recontextualized for a new generation. Spectacular narration helps bring the story to life and leaves the listener clamoring for the next chapter even if the twists and turns may be a little easy to predict.

Exceptional Narration Brings This Fantasy to Life
Revisado: 02-15-23
What is sure to be an epic trilogy is only slightly handicapped by this first novel clearly working hard to set up future installments of the story. The narration is superb and each character feels alive. I am looking forward to future installments of the story and discovering where Jacob continues to go on his journey.

Historia
Summer, 1989. It is a time for splashing in the lake and exploring the wilderness, for nine teenagers to bond together and create friendships that could last the rest of their lives. But among this group there is a young man with a secret—a secret that, in this time and place, is unthinkable to his peers. When the others discover the truth, it will change each of them forever. They will all have blood on their hands. Odd Man Out is a heart-wrenching tale of bullies and bigotry, a story that explores what happens when good people don't stand up for what's right.

Short, Powerful and Important
Revisado: 01-19-23
Odd Man Out is precisely the kind of uncomfortable story anyone needs to visit at some time in their life. To be clear, it is brutal and unafraid to explore the violence that can arise when will full ignorance runs rampant, but there is a tenderness and nostalgia in moments that elevates this story into something relatable and timeless.
Curtis Michael Holland performs the story with all the sincerity necessary for the simple but impactful message to be heard loud and clear. Hate can Kill. Empathy requires courage.
