Grisham is actually a really good sports writer. This book is both entertaining and realistic.

I've loved some of his other books. Gates of Fire is one of the best historical fiction titles ever. This wasn't on that level.

Spoilers: three law students with one semester left decide to drop out of law school and start practicing law without a license. This of course goes well at first, then it begins to backfire on them. It would be a good story if it were about a genius HS dropout, a Good Will Hunting type, who decides to pretend to be a lawyer and is actually good at it. But it's not. It's about three people who could have legally done every single thing that they did, if they would have sat in school for one more semester. It makes no sense that they wouldn't just finish their law degrees.

The narration is good, and you can listen to the whole book if you just sort of turn your brain off.

Let me start here, I'm a Libertarian. I'm not some Bernie Bro who hates everything American and came here with a bad opinion of Rand.

Everyone always asked me if I've read Ayn Rand. No, I have not. No? You really must!

So I did. It's a bunch of nothing. Endless dribble. Here is my real theory on this book: The characters discuss a fictional book by the character Lois Cook. The intelligent characters know that her book is pure garbage, worthless dribble, but they convince the masses that it is brilliant. There is a play called "No skin off your nose", or something like that. It's a terrible play, and the really intelligent characters know that. That's why they convice the masses that it's a brilliant play. Then they sit back and laugh as the rest of their world praises it. The Fountainhead is that play! It is Lois Cook's book! It is a garbage book that people say is great, because other people have told them that it is great.

If you feel that "you must" read it, as I did, do yourself a favor and get the abridged version.

The worst part of all of this is, I'm still going to read Atlas Shrugged. Because I feel that I really should read Atlas Shrugged.

Mahood is on par with Bill Bryson, skillfully written, fantasist adventure, great mix of education and humor. Well done George!

...but it doesn't really go anywhere. I thought this was going to be a real life, true, novel with mystery/suspense/action... I'm about 75% in and its just a list of important men he's met with, a few stock trades, and a dude that's been kicked out of Russia but get's back the UK safely. I don't know, maybe the last 25% makes it all worth it? I may finish it. May not.

Honestly I expected the book to be much better than an already great movie. It is very disappointing. The real story doesn't even start till about 75% in. I'd recommend skipping this and reading/listening to On The Wings of Eagles instead - same sort of story, but much much better! This is the rare case where the movie is just much better than the book!

Spanish Short Stories for Beginners Audiolibro Por Claudia Orea arte de portada

Not for beginners

First of all, this is absolutely not for beginners. You don't hear a single word of English to explain what you're listening to till around an hour and a half in.

Once the English explanation of the story begins, it is really poorly done.

If you're a beginner - stay far away!

If you already speak Spanish, and you want to listen to basic conversations only in Spanish, this is probably really good for you. I'm tempted to return it and get my money back, but I'm thinking of keeping it and trying again in six months to see if I have learned enough (obviously elsewhere) to start following the stories.

I'm a big fan of Bill Bryson, and especially his book A Walk in the Woods. This book has a great idea, to walk around Lake Michigan, 1,000 miles total. The writer/narrator does a few things well, giving us a light amount of lake science and city history. But where did she stay? What did she eat? Where she really falls short is her lack of ability to connect with the reader through humor. The book is dry, and is both written and read like a long mid level college poem. On the flip side, it is an epic trip, and as a Michigan and Chicago native I enjoyed listening to her pass cities and landmarks that I know. If you are from the Lake Michigan area, and you enjoyed A Walk in the Woods and think you would still like it minus humor, then give it a read. It's not bad.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I have heard that this is a good book. I stopped part way into chapter one. I have perfect hearing, I couldn't make out the words in this recording unless I really concentrated.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Terrible recording

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes
