I love Don Winslow. I have loved his books about Mexico and the cartels. The second Neil Detective Kid was ridiculous at the point where the heroine is telling him a personal historical tragedy, then he comes in to a sex scene then on to the rest of the story. I know the books were written a LONG time ago, but I am happy he learned how to write a little more realistically. Disappointed.

It was a good thing for me to read this book and move my lens of understanding. I have no clue as to the veracity of the predictions, that is how unfamiliar I am with thinking about these issues.

The narration errors made it difficult for me not to focus on my irritation; that surprised me. If a person is sensitive to mispronunciation, be aware, going in.

I want to say that I understand Louise Penny working through her husbands dying, with this book. For that, it is sacred, I understand her process. That said:

1. I laughed out loud with the silliness of the plot. I have never considered the series to be Cozy, but this was...eh, Cozy.
2. After three books and even listening to the Acknowledgments, I am not a fan of the narration. At all. I miss you Ralph.
3. I understand Louise Penny has long term Recovery, but it just all seemed so reductionist.
4. I love Ruth. So much.
5. I think Gamache has jumped the Shark too. I have always given him latitude with his superiority and super-ness. This time I felt he was just toooooo much.
6. I was tired of the whole silly story.
7. The material about Canada during Prohibition was so interesting, I loved the information.
8. I am looking forward to the next book, a lot.

Where does The Story of Human Language rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This audio-book ranks in the top 10 for me and I LOVE The Great Courses!

What does Professor John McWhorter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He understands teaching and the need to find interesting nuggets of information, important to keep student interest up. He has experience, opinions, humor and he can laugh at himself. I thought he was just great. It was all I could do not to "binge" and just keep going and going and going!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I liked listening to three lectures at a time, if I had the time. One lecture kept me wanting more.

Any additional comments?

Take this course. You won't regret it!
