Historia
In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union appeared to be sliding inexorably toward a nuclear conflict over the placement of missiles in Cuba. Veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs has pored over previously untapped American, Soviet, and Cuban sources to produce the most authoritative book yet on the Cuban missile crisis.

After listening to a Dan Carlin Hardcore History episode, I thought to check out this book. Well worth the read! Exciting and frightening 13 days in October with new information about how very close we came to atomic warfare.

Historia
The legendary annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa - the name has since become a byword for a cataclysmic disaster - was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly 40,000 people. Beyond the purely physical horrors of an event that has only very recently been properly understood, the eruption changed the world in more ways than could possibly be imagined. Dust swirled round die planet for years, causing temperatures to plummet and sunsets to turn vivid with lurid and unsettling displays of light.

Local Event and Global Effect
Revisado: 05-07-13
Some natural events can have global consequences and that is what this book portrays. The sociopolitical background at the beginning is important as it makes sense of the post-eruption reaction. This book shows how everything is connected whether in the natural or human-made world. I would re-read this book to get all the details.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Almost 100 years later this war still impacts us
Revisado: 03-10-13
19th Century people fighting a 20th Century war that still resonates in the 21st Century. A telling of the characters involved and their critical decisions in politics and military strategy that lead up to and allowed the carnage of 4 bloody years to go on and on. More than 9 million died needlessly in a conflict that destroyed the European culture and sowed the seeds for WWII told confidently without too much detail of the battles. The background information he provides fleshes out the context with the culture at-large. The progress of the battles focus on key moments of strategy and tactics rather than a blow-by-blow accounting. If you want to understand many of the issues facing today's world, this history will give you something think about, including the liberation of the arabs and creation of the state of Israel, the concentration of imperialistic power into the hands of the Big Three, the beginning of industrial warfare and anonymous killing machines (i.e..Drones), and the ego-driven national insecurity that leads us into conflict again and again and again.

Jacky is growing up!
Revisado: 04-19-11
Another fine book and inspired dramatic narration. One thing that LA Meyer does with Jacky is to tell her story in the historical context (much of it accurate) of the times she lived in. I'm not sure why people think this is a young adult book per se besides having a youthful main character. I has many adult themes and looks at the world through Jacky's eyes seeing the good and bad of life played out. The sexual innuendoes are gentle and the violence is not gratuitous. Be sure to start with book #1 and you'll be hooked!

Had the Angles and Saxons not purposefully migrated to the isles of the Britons and brought with them their already-well-developed use of language, Angelina Jolie may never have appeared in the movie Beowulf. Professor Michael D.C. Drout is at his best when lecturing on the fascinating history, language, and societal adaptations of the Anglo-Saxons.

Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of 18th-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. Historia
He challenged the greatest empire on earth with a ragtag bunch of renegades and brought it to its knees. This is the real story of the pirates of the Caribbean. Henry Morgan, a 20-year-old Welshman, crossed the Atlantic in 1655, hell-bent on making his fortune. Over the next three decades, his exploits in the Caribbean became legendary. His daring attacks on the mighty Spanish empire on land and at sea determined the fates of kings and queens, and his victories helped shape the destiny of the New World.

Morbid Terrorists?
Revisado: 11-11-08
Captain Morgan and his motley crew were certainly outcasts of that society but also the unofficial attack arm of the early imperialistic aims of the English government. Without his actions, the Spanish would have made a stronger foothold in North America and the history of the USA would have been very different. The book and narrator is excellent. The description of the earthquake is vivid and interesting.

The White Company is a motley group of English mercenaries, fighting under the leadership of Sir Nigel Loring. Bound by an unquestioning respect for social order, patriotism, and a lust for adventure, the company makes its way to France to fight in the local wars. Encountering pirate ships and other dramas during their crossing, they finally land at Bordeaux and become involved with the fighting at the siege of Chateau of Villefranch du Perigord and in the Spanish Pyrenees.

A Good Tale
Revisado: 01-23-08
The White Company depicts the last gasps of Chivalry and feudalism in favor of more modern ideas (bowman winning wars and the rise of the merchant class) in a comical fashion. The characters are fun yet one becomes attached to them. I love this narrator - he has a nuanced voice for the various dialects and other vocal oddities (Sir Nigel's famous lisp).
As a confirmed Homes fan, I highly recommend this book and reading.
