Historia
In 1986, the SEC and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York began an investigation into Michael Milken, Drexel Burnham Lambert, and its High Yield and Convertible Bond Department, a department Michael created and was head of. Michael was the most successful and innovative financier of his time. Drexel, an upstart investment bank was also the most successful securities firm on Wall Street, thanks to Michael.

A must-read about government corruption
Revisado: 03-19-25
If you need more evidence of the utter corruption of our government, this account of the railroading of Michael Milken ought to do it for you. As a former SEC attorney in the 1980s, I am embarrassed and angered to have been part of the agency.

Historia
In the years immediately after the Civil War, tens of thousands of former slaves deposited millions of dollars into the Freedman's Bank. African Americans envisioned this new bank as a launching pad for economic growth and self-determination. But only nine years after it opened, their trust was betrayed and the Freedman's Bank collapsed. Fully informed by new archival findings, historian Justene Hill Edwards unearths a major turning point in American history in this comprehensive account of the Freedman's Bank and its depositors

Good book exposing not unexpected financial shenanigans.I would have liked a final accounting of how many people lost how much money and where it all went.

Historia
The Civil War is most remembered for the grand battles that have come to define it: Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, among others. However, as bestselling author Patrick K. O’Donnell reveals in The Unvanquished, a vital shadow war raged amid and away from the major battlefields that was in many ways equally consequential to the conflict’s outcome.

Historia
In the three decades before the Civil War, some ten million foreign-born people settled in the United States, forever altering the nation’s demographics, culture, and—perhaps most significantly—voting patterns. America’s newest residents fueled the national economy, but they also wrought enormous changes in the political landscape and exposed an ugly, at times violent, vein of nativist bigotry. Abraham Lincoln’s rise ran parallel to this turmoil; even Lincoln himself did not always rise above it.

Historia
When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and Vice-President Andrew Johnson became "the Accidental President", it was a dangerous time in America. Devastated by war and resorting to violence, many white Southerners hoped to restore a pre-Civil War society, if without slavery, and the pugnacious Andrew Johnson seemed to share their goals. With profound insights and making use of extensive research, Brenda Wineapple dramatically evokes this pivotal period in American history, when the country was rocked by the first-ever impeachment of a sitting American president.

Great read but colored by Lincoln cult bias
Revisado: 04-21-24
Great recounting of Johnson’s impeachment as long as you recognize in the author’s unfortunate and common bias that Mr. Lincoln’s war and Reconstruction were unquestionably the best public policy choices to solve the problems of slavery and its aftermath.

Historia
On the morning after the 2016 presidential election, Thomas Ricks awoke with a few questions on his mind: What kind of nation did we now have? Is it what was designed or intended by the nation's founders? Trying to get as close to the source as he could, Ricks decided to go back and read the philosophy and literature that shaped the founders' thinking, and the letters they wrote to each other debating these crucial works—among them the Iliad, Plutarch's Lives, and the works of Xenophon, Epicurus, Aristotle, Cato, and Cicero.

Mostly not a bad listen but...
Revisado: 12-21-20
... the author’s Trump Derangement Syndrome... what caused him to write the book and the bulk of the Epilogue... is a real turn-off. The Epilogue is in fact a total nonsequitur for the book’s history.

Historia
In 1943, the United States military began to plan one of the most dramatic secret missions of World War II. Its code name was Operation Vengeance. Naval Intelligence had intercepted the itinerary of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander in chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet, whose stealth attack on Pearl Harbor precipitated America’s entry into the war. Harvard-educated, Yamamoto was a close confidant of Emperor Hirohito and a brilliant tactician who epitomized Japanese military might.

300% too long
Revisado: 12-07-20
The actual story could be told in about 3 hours. The book has a lot of WWII filler— i.e., the author spends way more time on the battle for Guadalcanal than the mission to kill Yamamoto and the controversy over credit for the downing of Yamamoto’s plane. Not a bad listen but not a lot of focus on what made me listen to the book in the first place.

Historia
At the end of World War II, the United States was considered the victor over tyranny and a champion of freedom. But it was clear—to some—that the Soviet Union was already seeking to expand and foment revolution around the world, and the American government’s strategy in response relied on the secret efforts of a newly formed CIA. Chronicling their fascinating lives, Scott Anderson follows the exploits of four spies. Despite their ambitions, time and again their efforts went awry, thwarted by ham-fisted politicking and ideological rigidity at the highest levels of the government.

Good spy stories. Bad/biased history.
Revisado: 10-17-20
Great real life spy stories well told. Author has standard biased progressive views of history re FDR, Truman, Joe McCarthy, Cold War, Vietnam etc. But there’s enough in here to explain the origin and problems of the Deep State.
