Drive by John Nuckel was a fresh surprise for a crime thriller. Well thought out and woven beautifully, the book was not easy to put down! The characters were well portrayed- with some like Sheng you love to hate, or Pap that keep you wondering, and Annie Falcone is quite the diamond in the rough. The story of the volunteers with such a substantial background and raw beginning captivated my mind immediately.
The book starts in late 1800’s with the beginning of the Volunteers and the crucial state of NYC life being ruled by mob bosses thugs and the like- with a small group of men who set out to make the city better- Et omnia recta- who volunteer to make the city great agin. Woody Kane and Jacob Riis couldn’t have been a better duo, in high class-working class combination, they set out to conquer and with the discreet help of well known names, anything was possible. The book goes into modern day society and the work of the volunteers is still alive and pumping- the national security has been threatened by a geek from MIT with manic episodes putting the entire US in danger. Annie is recruited to guard with her life, the one man who can change the fate of the world.... I would have like more development in the relationship of the dynamic duos within the book (sorry not giving up the deets!) but overall this book was a smashing read.

A troubling tale of a bright young man in a middle class family with so much to look forward to in life…. He becomes witness to the massacre of his mother and father and sister, after that he was never the same. He moves from a good neighborhood to the Ghettos of Boston with his Aunt and younger sister. Manuel becomes a lost youth full of anger and viciousness. Manuel is stuck in the middle of the light and the dark, with his life events dragging him more and more to the dark side as his life goes on. Becoming more and more violent, he even scares his friends who see the look in his eyes that he actually likes hurting and killing people. The story continues with drugs, hoodlums, women, swindling, killing, money making and running the streets as the street sweepers gang. Eventually, Manuel/ Man Man/ Yoel and his actions catch up to him, and he goes to prison under an alias name of Valentine. While there, a haunting experience, and who was behind it is revealed while in the slammer; igniting a new fire in him. Once out after years of being in prison, he is met with respect in the streets, love from his Aunt and sister, as well as a ghost from the past with a “present” for his future. You cannot help but feel intense love and hate for this character and the struggles he has endured which made him the man he is. Fantastic book of a young man “searching for his rightful place in society” that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good read/listening experience.

A wonderful story of a young boy and a dolphin. They form an unlikely relationship and grow up together in the Bahamas. This was an endearing story of a boy named Toby in need of a friend and finding one in the unlikeliest place. The story continues of his growth and school years with his Grandparents and locals in their Bahama home area. In turn, the book also gives perspective of the dolphin’s point of view, which was very interesting. I love the time period of the story and all of the detail put into it. The best way to describe this is “finding yourself and finding home”. This was a great book to listen to and I would recommend to all!

THIS book right here was fantastic! I can’t wait to read the next book, the ending especially left me wanting more. The relationships building with the healers and the skills they acquired fully rounded out the individuals in the book. Love is building bonds forming, I love it! The deception you could see coming all along and you hoped for it to be different but it happens anyways is unnerving and keeps you glued! It was a little bit difficult to keep up at one point with the characters having their old names and all the different dimensions and castes but once I got it all sorted it made me want to read more. Great book!
