Dated and disappointing after loving it as a teen

I first read this as a teenager, during a period when I read a lot of classic science fiction and found it very formative. Upon re-reading it 45 years later I was shocked at what I had never noticed as a young teen -- there is not a single female character in the entire novel. Actually, I overstate -- there is one unpleasant wife who appears in two short scenes, who is never named and who serves only as plot device: her unpleasant nagging explains some of her husband's behavior. There is literally never even a single mention of any other woman. I can't imagine what this must have done at the time to my psyche and those of other young women who read it. This time around, it was entirely alienating. Although the skin color of the characters is not mentioned, one comes away with a strong sense that the only important actors in the galaxy are white men. This makes the novel dated -- it doesn't make Asimov evil or diminish his importance as a figure in sci fi. Equally importantly, it highlights how normal it was in mid-20th century USA to not 'see' people other than white men as real people and potential shapers of the world. A vivid reminder of darker days of the past. I wouldn't go back there and I removed Second Foundation from my list of future listens.

A lyrical memoir

This was a beautiful, lyrical memoir about the author's beloved uncle and aunt, who came from very different countries and backgrounds (India and Germany, respectively) and who both survived WWII. Their experiences were very different and yet uniting. I recommend this book for people who like thoughtful, lyrical writing and are curious about the lives and experiences of others, both joyful and tragic.
