Historia
A Paradise Built in Hell is an investigation of the moments of altruism, resourcefulness, and generosity that arise amid disaster's grief and disruption and considers their implications for everyday life. It points to a new vision of what society could become - one that is less authoritarian and fearful, more collaborative and local.

Enjoyed the book despite the narration
Revisado: 05-27-23
Really interesting book, with a lot of interesting insights, well researched; however, the narration was really hard to listen too. The use of accents, which were not well done, was inconsistent and and honestly sometimes offensive. Also some strange pronunciations, like “New OR-lay-ahns,” which I’ve never heard from anyone before. It was so distracting that had to stop listening and just read the rest of the book my library. Perhaps this narrator would be better for fiction.

Historia
Our most commonly held formula for success is broken. Conventional wisdom holds that once we succeed, we’ll be happy; that once we get that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But the science reveals this formula to be backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.

Disappointed with narration as well as content
Revisado: 05-12-12
I feel bad being so negative about a book on positive psychology, but I really had a hard time with this book. The Happiness Advantage should have been at least half as long as it was. The first 45 or so minutes were devoted to the author "selling" the book to me (I'm already reading it-- I'm game) and much of the book was extremely redundant. Overall, there were far too many extraneous self-indulgent, dull or tangential anecdotes for my taste. I liked a lot of the strategies the author presented, but I felt like I could have gotten the same benefit from reading a long article about the topic.
When it came to the audio, I found the narration (by the author) extremely unpleasant. It may just be personal taste, but I had trouble staying engaged because everything had the same, repeated cadence. I also felt the tone was a bit condescending, but that may be my personal frustration with the book showing through.
Overall, there are many books on implementing positive psychology in one's work, like those by Kim Cameron, which I would recommend instead of this one.
