Well written mystery with lots of twists and turns. The serial killer is one sick b...d, but I am happy to report that a horrific autopsy report is as graphic as it gets. I loved the gutsy heroine and the young lead detective. Even minor characters had distinct personalities. And the narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and had high hopes for it. The combination of political conspiracy and ghost story sounded like it had real potential. Sadly, I found it disappointing.
The bad guys plan to take over the government, but their agenda is unclear. They are already in positions of power. How would they be any worse than the politicians we already have? As for the good guys, I found it implausible that a DC police detective would come up this plan and involve civilians in it, let alone the woman he loves, without someone above him questioning what he's doing. [Here's where my eyes started rolling.]
The narrator did a fine job, considering.

My guilty pleasure

I love the characters in this book, and I've listened to the audio book multiple times. Identical twins Lily and Paige may look alike, but they couldn't be more different--so watching them try to switch identities is a hoot. Poor Jace is definitely confused when his neighbor, who definitely wasn't his type, suddenly is. To further complicate things, both Jace and Lily/Paige are being stalked and threatened, but is it the same perpetrator or two different people?

So we have spicy romance, humor, likeable characters, and a mystery. What fun! My only complaint is the last chapter, which felt tacked on and a bit out-of-character. But that could just be me. Either way, I'm glad Audible had this as one of their Daily Deals.

The Middle of the Story

The Bad Guy is really bad.
The Heroine is tough, smart, and emotionally screwed up.
There are still two men trying to win the Heroine.
And life is still complicated for everyone.

Read it!

Wonderful Ending to the Series

FEARLESS is the third book in the Complicated Creatures series. IMHO, you really need to have read the previous two books ("Complicated Creatures" and "Hell or High Water") to get the full impact of this one.

First, there is the final confrontation between Samantha and her team against the Bad Guy.

Second, there is the resolution of Samantha's complicated love life. Which man will win her heart, Roman or Wesley?

I didn't think Ms. Lawless could possible come up with a satisfactory ending, but she did. Now I have to go back to the first book and listen again.

Complicated Creatures and Complicated Plot

See the official blurb for the basic plot. What has me enthralled with this book (and the two sequels) are the characters.

Samantha is one tough, smart, over-achieving, beautiful woman. She's ex-military and now runs a private security firm. She can plan a military op with the best of them, and her kick-ass team adores and respects her, but she's got a complicated back story that's left her emotionally scarred. She now keeps her emotional distance, which is driving her current lover crazy.

Roman is a wealthy businessman and a notorious womanizer -- until Sam moves in next door. Now, he's totally obsessed with Sam, but the relationship is complicated. There's so much about her that she won't share, and he's not sure he even knows her.

During an op that goes bad, Sam re-encounters Wesley, the man she loved in college. Their respective careers tore them apart years ago, and now he wants to rekindle that love. But the issues from their past are so, yes, complicated.

Warning: Usually, I deduct stars for cliffhanger endings, but this book is just so good that I'm making an exception. No story this complex (I refuse to type the other "c" word again) could ever be resolved in just one book.

Not Proven vs Not Guilty. Not the same thing.

Our heroine has been hurt repeatedly by friends, family, and her husband. Now, she is alone, broke, and hated by the people her husband ripped off. No one, especially the government, believes that she could have been so oblivious to her husband's business. Going home seems like a reasonable thing to do, but starting over is hard to do. I admire the heroine's willingness to work, even if it's a menial job. I enjoyed seeing how she gradually builds up her self-confidence, finds love, and clears her name. HEA.

Emily, get your license.

I have two pieces of advice for retired police officer Emily and her husband. First, you both seem destined to be stumbling over corpses during your travels, so Emily should think seriously about getting a P.I. license. Second, STAY AWAY FROM GARAGE SALES!

I enjoyed this book very much, but I have to take off a star for the fact that I tagged the killer almost immediately. I just didn't know exactly WHY, which was reason enough to keep listening. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes of the grandkids driving the adults crazy. It all sounded very true-to-life to me.

The narrator does a fine job with this series, and she's easy to listen to. Over all, it was an enjoyable listen.
