Thought I had it figured out
Revisado: 02-20-24
I have enjoyed the other Kate Morton books that I've read. I enjoy the juxtaposition of eras and going back and forth between them. This one followed the same style as the characters tried to figure out the "secret." Loved the unexpected ending!

Enjoyed this read
Revisado: 04-24-23
I listened to this one as a sequel, but I can see how it could stand alone as well. Enjoyed the peek into the history and the cultural norms of that time and place. Although I am not familiar with the dialect, it was easy to understand and seemed plausible.... it really didn't matter to me if it was absolutely accurate to those who were from that area and era!

No one mourned when San Francisco DA Wes Farrell put Paul Riley in prison eleven years ago for the rape and murder of his girlfriend. And no one is particularly happy to see him again when he’s released after The Exoneration Initiative uncovered evidence that pinned the crime on someone else. In fact, Riley soon turns up murdered, surrounded by the loot from his latest scam. But if Riley was really innocent all along, who wanted him dead?

Jaques Roy does have a pleasant voice, but unfortunately does not distinguish between characters very much. We popped in after taking a break and couldn't figure out who was speaking... realized it was Glitzky and his wife... Abe has always before been portrayed with a gruff voice, and now he sounds just like his wife. Sure makes it harder to follow.

A bit trite
Revisado: 04-03-18
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. Although the narration fit the pace of the story, his Irish came naturally but his American accent often seemed choppy or stilted.
Not wanting to give anything away, but too many things fell into place unnaturally easily at end of the book. Solutions just came out of nowhere. Made it seem trite to me.

Historia
Like Anne Frank, Flory Van Beek was a young girl caught in the ruthless Nazi occupation of Holland. But Flory survived to recount her extraordinary story of persecution and survival. Flory and her husband, Felix, endured the sinking of a ship bound for safety in the New World, the increasing danger of the occupation, and finally a life in hiding. This inspiring account vividly captures the terror of the Holocaust while telling a poignant story of love and courage.

Another view of a tragic time
Revisado: 04-14-14
Would you listen to Flory again? Why?
I enjoyed listening to this book. Another review stated that her writing was not polished. I agree, but that took nothing away from the story which is the recounting of her own life. I don't feel like I got the full sense of the terror they experienced, but unlike another reviewer, I don't think the story of the families who hid them would make any better story - just as good yes, but not necessarily better. I do think the narrator reading it with a bit more gritty feel might have enhanced the memorial as she was just a bit too calm a reader for the content, especially knowing it was an old woman telling a story from her youth. But please, enjoy the read for what it is - a first-hand account of what it was to hide in fear from the Nazi regime in Holland, but this time to have the good outcome of survival - when fewer than 4% of the Dutch Jewish population made it through the war. Amazing.

A sinister masterpiece, Our Mutual Friend was Dickens' last completed novel. It is perhaps his ultimate vision of a dark, macabre London and the corrupting power of money.

Classic Dickens, Well Read
Revisado: 01-07-09
I was unfamiliar with this Dickens book, but thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator is great. Editor could have been better (several repeated lines or phrases that should have been eliminated). But the story is classic Dickens (I sure enjoy his phrasing) and the narrator's rendering has such a flow that far surpassed some other Dickens audiobooks I've heard in the past. Wegg sounded just as smarmy as he should have (rather Uriah Heep-ish) and Mr. Boffin seemed a genuine, right jolly old fellow. An enjoyable listen, and of course long enough to make friends of the characters and not feel the visit was cut unnecessarily short.

Take Two
Revisado: 06-09-06
I agree with the previous reviewer - the author must have read Pride and Prejudice one time too many and couldn't get it out of her mind. From the very first introduction of the "Mr. Darcy" character and his comments at the dance, I saw it coming. Instead of creating any tender feeling for a developing relationship, the dialogue that was blatantly Austen made me laugh and made me mad! I DID enjoy the remainder of the book, about the events of the time and the clever use of the quilt. I just wish she had started with an original - or at least significantly altered - premise for the interaction of the characters.
