Historia
In the six lectures of Teenage Wastelands: A Guide to Dystopian Young Adult Fiction, award-winning YA author Sherri L. Smith will show you why dystopian stories have become so successful and why they continue to inspire. As you trace the history of dystopian stories and dive into some of YA’s most influential tales of the future, you’ll see why these often dark and challenging works have such a hold on the imagination. From The Giver to The Hunger Games to Orleans, dystopian tales allow us to grapple with hard questions and consider how we want to live—both now and in the future.

What & Why
Revisado: 04-10-25
All too often I see books that are called "dystopian," and most of those indeed have some of the elements. This set of lectures explains in very clear terms what the term means, especially in young adult literature AND why it is so popular, namely that it strips away the irrelevant and focuses on threats, hopes, and dreams.
.
My only complaint is that I wish that a list of titles mentioned was available separately.

Thoughts on life

Excellent meditation on life. Not what I expected, but Manchester did an outstanding job of describing a 12 month period that could have been terribly sad but was instead a celebration.

Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

The best Jake Brigance novel so far
Revisado: 10-19-20
This novel has NEARLY everything: domestic abuse, family law, financial difficulties, courtroom drama, and CAPITAL MURDER.
.
I have enjoyed all of John Grisham's books, but this one shows his storytelling and dramatic powers at what I think is a new high, even for Grisham. The characters range from sympathetic to villainous and all are clearly drawn. From judges to lawyers (retired and active) to prospective law students.
.
I especially liked Lucian Wilbanks and Harry Rex though they play relatively minor (but very important) roles in this story. I look forward to some future novel where Portia, Jake's legal aide, returns for an encore performance.
.
There are minor racial overtones developed in the novel, but those are not the main thrust of the story
.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Too much
Revisado: 11-25-19
I like P.T.Deutermann's novels. They rarely disappoint. This one did not live up to my high expectations, largely because of believability. There are too many incidents that span a huge breadth from a new pilot being involved in the Battle of Midway and then moving to guerilla warfare in the Philippines. I generally enjoyed the novel, but I just didn't find myself getting fully invested in the story because it didn't feel like they connected with my ideas of what happened. I enjoyed this one, but more in a routine kind of way rather than the types of novels that Deutermann has written previously in which I became fully invested and believed the story was plausible.

Historia
Cassandra King was leading a quiet life as a professor, divorced "Sunday wife" of a preacher, and debut novelist when she met Pat Conroy. Their friendship bloomed into a tentative, long-distance relationship. Pat and Cassandra ultimately married, partly because Pat hated the commute from coastal South Carolina to her native Alabama. It was a union that would last 18 years, until the beloved literary icon’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2016. In this poignant, intimate memoir, the woman he called King Ray looks back at her love affair with a natural-born storyteller.

The backstory and the end of the line
Revisado: 11-25-19
I have read NEARLY all of Pat Conroy's books (I will admit that I've missed two), but he was one of my very favorite authors. I would read (or listen to) his books and laugh or cry or both, but was always held spellbound. So, now that he is gone, his widow has written the story of her life with Pat. It moved me. A love story. An insider look at the life and some of the family situations that shaped Pat's writing. He was larger than life in many ways, and Cassandra King's telling reflects that with humor and feeling. Indeed, no one should doubt that Cassandra King is a talented writer - I've now started on her novels, and I'm sure I will discover that she's the "Same Sweet Girl" she's always been. A thank you to Cassandra for having revealed herself and Pat in this moving book.

Great murder mystery
Revisado: 11-24-19
This is a murder mystery AND a family drama. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It provided some information as to the workings of the English system of laws (not to mention the difference between solicitors and barristers - which I had never understood previously). This novel continued the "trademark" of the Francis novels of providing an inside look at an area of English life and the background of the practices in an industry (in this case, the legal industry and the law).
.
All of that said, I did NOT enjoy this particular novel quite as much as I have enjoyed all of the others in the Dick Francis/Felix Francis novels. A four and a third stars rather than a solid five stars. Still head and shoulders above what most other authors do and well worth the investment.
