Historia
Brooke Shields has spent a lifetime in the public eye. Growing up as a child actor and model, her every feature was scrutinized, her every decision judged. Today Brooke faces a different kind of scrutiny: that of being a “woman of a certain age.” And yet, for Brooke, the passage of time has brought freedom. At fifty-nine, she feels more comfortable in her skin, more empowered and confident than she did decades ago in those famous Calvin Kleins. Now, in Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, she’s changing the narrative about women and aging.

I really enjoyed this
Revisado: 02-03-25
I am not at all the target audience, but I got a lot out of this book. I’ve been a Brooke Shields fan for most of my life, and I’ve enjoyed watching her do her next thing over and over. I’m inspired. Thanks, Brooke!

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Great reader
Revisado: 12-22-23
I wasn't sure about the story about halfway through, but wow did things turn around! It's really good. The reader is very good. The writing is great too. It inspires me to read (or listen to) anything she writes. She's also a great interview. Big thumbs up on this one. I listened to the last chapter in the stairwell before entering my apartment. I cried. It was lovely.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 09-16-23
Here is the strength of this book: It outlines what the book does, what it offers, how it helps. She gives examples of how it has helped her and others. She relates the book's teachings to actual life experiences that readers can relate to. I was sort of expecting an audiobook version of The Course. That's not at all what this is. It's almost better. After listening to a bit of it, I bought the actual Course in Miracles. Grout's enthusiasm about the Course and its benefits convinced me that it is something I want to have in my life. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her. She's like a friend who's actually done things that other people keep talking about.

Crazy good narration
Revisado: 09-10-22
The story is epic and sweeping. Beautifully detailed and niche. Some amazing lines. I didn’t want it to end. One of my favorite books I’ve ever listened to.

I was surprised how quickly I was hooked.
Revisado: 10-15-20
While I am fascinated by stories like this, I was surprised how quickly I was drawn in by the story. Well told, long enough, much more involved than maybe I expected it to be. Crazy. And I was not allowed to donate when I wanted because I am a gay man. Whatevs, yo. This is what you get. Screening process broken.

Historia
I almost didn’t publish Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It. Here I was, a CEO who’d fallen apart after his company failed, writing a book about how loving himself saved him. I thought I’d be a laughingstock and my career would be finished. But I stepped through the fears and shared my truth with the world. The book went viral. Amazing people all over bought copies for friends and family. For some, this book saved their lives. For others, it was the first time they ever loved themselves.

Revisado: 01-23-20
Kamal has a soothing, calming voice that narrates his story. It pulls you in as though you’re experiences his life right along side him. I’ve read a lot of “self-help” books, but this one shares valuable, everyday exercises that will bring immediate calm.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

I bought in and loved it
Revisado: 09-29-19
I agree with some of the other reviews that that is sort of like two books, and I agree that the format took me a while to get into (who is Angela, and why is she writing - and I totally got that all of that will be revealed at a later time). However, I really enjoyed listening to it. I was on vacation, and I binge listened. It was perfect for that. Also, I agree with anyone who says that the reader is phenomenal. She was so perfect in every way that it makes me want to look up all of the other books she's read and listen to them. I could even tell which British character she was doing. It was just wonderful to listen to. I am crazy about Elizabeth Gilbert, and I immediately wanted to write her and thank her for this amazing and inspiring book. I'm going to have to figure out how to do that. Oh. And I read that someone found it predictable. I did not. I don't know what they were talking about, but haters gonna hate. As I said in the title, I bought in and loved it. I completely enjoyed the ride - and I'm not even really her target audience.

Historia
Gretchen Rubin has found that getting control of our stuff makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of things we don't use, don't need, or don't love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what's realistic for most people, Gretchen Rubin suggests dozens of manageable steps for creating a more serene, orderly environment - one that helps us to create the lives we want.

I wanted more
Revisado: 07-12-19
I enjoy listening to Gretchen Rubin's podcast. I like her books. I love her philosophy and how she's taken this habit thing and run with it. This book just feels like a bunch of blog posts strung together. As Gertrude Stein once said about Oakland, California (because I know Gretchen loves a good quote), "There's no there there." I kept waiting for a big action plan or something that said, "Here's how to start." There's that pithy list of ten suggestions at the end, but that's about it. I really do like her. I love the idea of the book. I like how she reads. She references Marie Condo's book "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up". That's a book I can get behind. That's a book with a plan and that has a clear through line. It pains me to write this. I'm a fan, but I'm an honest fan. Sorry, Gretch.

Great book
Revisado: 04-20-19
As with The Game of Life and How to Play It, I have listened to this book a number of times. I get something new out of it each time. The content it tops, of course, but the performance adds so much. I recommend it without hesitation to anyone who has even a passing interest in metaphysics or in breaking through barriers.
