No exaggeration—a GREAT piece of work!
Revisado: 07-25-24
Drawn by the exalted ratings to this book, I didn’t think another Lincoln book would be that impressive. But
I found the writing and narration to be truly remarkable and entertaining. Lincoln’s “voice” and presence seemed very near and tangible. This was a deeply satisfying communication of a life that defies definition.
Well done!

A fascinating narrative, and a bold new thesis in the study of the Civil War, that suggests Robert E. Lee had a heretofore undiscovered strategy at Gettysburg that, if successful, could have crushed the Union forces and changed the outcome of the war.

This just makes sense…
Revisado: 07-14-24
Yes …another book about Gettysburg….
But, while not an captivating written or narration this book IS vitally important to finally understand Day #3 of the battle.
It always puzzled me why a brilliant tactician as Lee would launch a desperate, almost suicidal charge on the union center on that day.
Finally, Carhart lays out his theory that places Pickett’s assault in the framework of a grander plan that might have resulted in Lee’s greatest victory ever.
This book belongs on the civil war historian’s bookshelf.
It is absolutely worth the somewhat methodical and sometimes disjointed narrative Carhart chooses to use.
But in the end you have a very well supported thesis that finally makes sense of what seemed like a senseless slaughter. Glad to have read it.
Now I want to go back to Gettyburg and spend more time on the East Cavalry Battlefield.

Solid and worthwhile for the history buff, and a story with numerous surprises!
Revisado: 06-04-24
Though it was not a nail-biter or page-turner this book was full of surprises for me, revealing many things that I thought I knew about the Revolutionary War were not quite true. These kept me going through tedious parts of the story, which I listened to at 1.4 speed.
The narration handled the many foreign names of participants very well. The delivery was smooth, and even, without a great deal of voice inflection—-but enjoyable nonetheless.

Historia
The extraordinary career of George Catlett Marshall - America’s most distinguished soldier - statesman since George Washington - whose selfless leadership and moral character influenced the course of two world wars and helped define the American century. Set against the backdrop of five major conflicts - two world wars, Palestine, Korea, and the Cold War - Marshall's education in military, diplomatic, and political power, replete with their nuances and ambiguities, runs parallel with America's emergence as a global superpower.

Respect that is due!
Revisado: 05-24-24
Marshall stands out among his peers and in almost complete contrast to media driven celebrity today. His sense of duty and willingness to serve unselfishly seem unbelievable.
The book was well done, and Bramhall did an excellent job conveying the message and personality of the man
In narration. I listened at 1.25 speed to move the story along when some of details slowed things too much for me.
Overall—Very satisfying. I wish more people could appreciate Marshall’s life and I recommend this book to history buffs.

Perhaps no one else….
Revisado: 11-23-23
Perhaps no one else could have steered people so diverse and stubbornly self-centered to awaken to their destiny as “the greatest generation.” To move from Isolationism becoming the arsenal of democracy and cope with discordant factions at the same time is remarkable. The personal victories and tragedies are heartfelt. This is a story of “US” that needs to be appreciated. The author and narrator made a terrific team. it is long, and sometimes tedious…but ultimately WORTHWHILE!

A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

Incredible, Tragic, Gut-wrenching Narrative
Revisado: 08-14-23
In Harm’s Way is a terrific read about a terrible loss of the U.S.S. Indianapolis cruiser sunk by a Japanese sub after delivering components to the first atomic bomb. Almost three of every four crewmen perished in the sinking, and days of horrific endurance of shark infested waters. The Navy made the Indy’s Captain their scapegoat.
This is a wonderful telling of a terrible ordeal of war, and an attempt to bring justice to the innocent. Great book.

Integrated approaches to teaching Greek and Roman history are a rarity in academia. Most scholars are historians of either Greek or Roman history and perform research solely in that specific field, an approach that author and award-winning Professor Robert Garland considers questionable. In these 36 passionate lectures, he provides and impressive and rare opportunity to understand the two dominant cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world in relation to one another-a relationship that has virtually no parallel in world history.

An excellent survey!
Revisado: 02-22-23
A sudden need for an ancient history teacher at our school prompted my need to quickly upgrade my competence in Greek and Roman history.
This was an enjoyable and efficient course to listen to. The content was excellent, and the humor was invigorating. Sure it takes a while to work through, and some parts are less interesting, but you come away with a sense of satisfaction and excitement about going deeper into the subject. Well done!

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....
