First read this when I was 14 or so. Several decades later it's still a good yarn. This one has more plausibility than star beast and others. More hard (fictional) science. Guess this sort of book got be to be a physicist!

This is very much a Boy Scouts in space story. The science is very old and totally implausible. The story gets a bit repetitive and the characters totally bizarre behavior can get a bit irritating.
However, on the spirit of the old Heinlein juvenile series and Enid Blyton meets Skylarks in Space it is worth a go !

An unexpected suprise

I had seen this book being pushed and expected to be disappointed.
However, it is outstanding. One of the best Science Fiction books I have read in a very long time.
Highly original ideas and concepts here. Excellent performance in the audio performance.
Wholly recommended as is Ender's shadow.

Knowing the written book very well, this abridged reading skips rather too much. All the detail of the original is lost.
But... on the otherhand for a first-time reader/listener it might work well to tell the tale an lead onto the written version or unabridged audible.

This is one of Kiplings best books and should have been be a good introduction to many reader/listeners. Unfortunately the reader has little concept of what an English accent of that period might be like and the Dick-Van-Dyke accent with other very odd accents seriously detracts from the reading. The worst however is the mispronunciation of English words. Ok, so they are not in every day use in the USA but perhaps the reader should have found how to pronounce "coombe" etc.
