Historia
In early 2018, Larry Nassar, the former doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University, was sentenced to serve out the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to a variety of sex crimes. New York Times best-selling author Mary Pilon and Carla Correa chronicle the scandal from its inception, tracking the institutions that Nassar hid behind, the athletic culture that he benefited from, and the women who eventually brought him to justice.

Must-read
Revisado: 10-01-23
This is a must read for every parent, every parent of a child in sport, every coach or sport doctor. I was peripherally aware of the story but found this stunning, compelling and heart-breaking. We each need to do more to assure that sexual predators are stopped as soon as they are identified. This was educational, to say the least, and kudos, kudos, kudos to the women who stood up for themselves and against Larry Nassar.

Historical fiction with modern sensibilities
Revisado: 02-04-21
The story was interesting and with a nice flow. The characters were endowed with modern attitudes and these were intermittently distracting.

Modern American sensibilities superimposed on 20th century India
Revisado: 03-09-19
Parts of the story were interesting but it was not believable that a traditional, subjected Indian would think like a 1990s American woman. This was made more distracting by the over dramatic reading by the narrator. Opportunities for character development were lost to stereotypes. The protagonist spends an annoying amount of time navel gazing about her misfortune of miscarriages.

One more reason to avoid an author who narrates

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I was attracted and intrigued by the title and good reviews. But I am having trouble getting past the narrator's clear high regard for his writing. The writing is fine, but when read as if the listener should be impressed with the sweeping prose....it gets old fast.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

Would you try another book from Johann Hari and/or Tim Gerard Reynolds?
The story is excellent and fascinating. The narrator uses voices that are bizarre and irritating caricatures. I would find the text more interesting and more memorable if the voice of the narrator wasn't in my head. Reynolds uses over-wrought voices that are very distracting.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Chasing the Scream?
The story of Billie Holiday.

maybe my last 'read by author' book. Takes willpower not to be put to sleep. The story itself is interesting, but the narrator sounds self-absorbed and lacks quality.

Historia
Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Tired of the 'wise old' child
Revisado: 04-13-15
What did you like best about Yellow Crocus? What did you like least?
The picture on the cover
Would you be willing to try another book from Laila Ibrahim? Why or why not?
No. I found the characters to be simplistic and stereotypic. I have grown tired of the genre of that attributes wise, adult thoughts and actions to young children. This is how Lisbeth was portrayed. She vacillated between being a spoiled person (sometimes very adult in her outlook, sometimes age appropriate) and a wise loving person.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator did a good job of differentiating the characters. I disliked that all the white people sounded snobbish and self-centered--with almost every word.
Did Yellow Crocus inspire you to do anything?
Yes. Listen to "The Kitchen House".

Historia
In this riveting landmark autobiography, which reads like a novel, Academy Award and Emmy winner Louis Gossett, Jr., masterfully transports us to 1840s New York; Washington, D.C.; and Louisiana to experience the kidnapping and 12 years of bondage of Solomon Northup, a free man of color. Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, was an immediate bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War.

A book better read as text.
Revisado: 02-01-15
What did you like best about this story?
Excellent first hand account
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Louis Gossett, Jr.?
A professional narrator. Louis Gossett Jr often speaks quietly and lowers his voice. This makes listening difficult in any setting other than absolute silence. Forget listening during a commute.
Any additional comments?
The book is written in the language of the times. This is another reason why it would be better visually read than as an audiobook. Some of the flowery words don't translate well to being read.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

If the narrator is bored, I am bored
Revisado: 11-29-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The narrator sounds like he finds the characters and situations dull. This makes for tough listening. I am continuing to listen, but it takes work.
Would you recommend 14 to your friends? Why or why not?
Probably not. The story is average and the narrator below average.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His intonation is repetitive and lacks an interest in most of the characters and the story. I felt like a child being read a bedtime story by a bored parent who was just praying I'd fall asleep.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Nope.

Striking beauty comes at a price. Rahab paid it when at the age of 15 she was sold into prostitution by the one man she loved and trusted—her father. With her keen mind and careful planning she turned heartache into success, achieving independence while still young. And she vowed never again to trust a man. Any man. God had other plans. Into the emotional turmoil of her world walked Salmone, a prominent leader of Judah, held in high esteem by all Israel.

Modern girl lives in ancient Jericho
Revisado: 07-22-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is a common formula--write a story that supposedly occurred long ago with the main character having the personality characteristics of a 21st century adolescent. This just doesn't work for me. Add to that a not-so-good narrator, who stumbles over middle Eastern names and uses caricature voices, and you have a not-so-good read.
Would you recommend Pearl in the Sand to your friends? Why or why not?
Nope.
Would you be willing to try another one of Laural Merlington’s performances?
Probably not unless she got great ratings from other listeners.
