Historia
The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.

Historia
Ruthanna Emrys’ Innsmouth Legacy, which began with Winter Tide and continues with Deep Roots, confronts H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos head-on, boldly upturning his fear of the unknown with a heart-warming story of found family, acceptance, and perseverance in the face of human cruelty and the cosmic apathy of the universe. Emrys brings together a family of outsiders, bridging the gaps between the many people marginalized by the homogenizing pressure of 1940s America.

This book, and the one that came before it, feel so good that they feel.... personal? The characters, the plot, the ideas brought up, the backdrop. This one is going to be sitting with me for a long time.

Historia
Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

no expectations
Revisado: 06-03-16
multiple times, I thought the story would go over way, only to, thankfully, have it go another. The narrator gotta a good job performance-wise. Though this annoyed me as the main charter often did. Accurate though.

Historia
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship - the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

introspective teen fiction
Revisado: 05-01-16
I had this book recommended to me down the grapevine. I can see why. It is one of those introspective teen books that captures what it feels like when you think you know everything and know nothing at all at same time. But this one deals with border life and queerness and different kinds of headspaces. When I saw that Lin Manuel Miranda was narrating, I bought it. It is a slower burn kind of book, but if you've gotten this far and are intrigued, you'll probably like it.

Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs. The trick with found things, though, is how easily they can be lost. Friends can betray. Mothers can disappear. I'm not sure if it was the narration or the pride itself, but the use of words in this story was quite magical.

not an easy story to ingest, given the content and nature of it. But it is a good Book 1. I look forward to Book 2.
