Historia
Santa Vittoria is a fictional town, still remote from the rest of war-torn Italy, where the citizens, led by their wine-loving mayor Bombolini, scheme and plot to prevent the Germans from locating and looting the town's only treasure - its fabulous wine cellars. A best seller and the inspiration for the famous film starring Anthony Quinn, this warm, rich novel has already drawn thousands upon thousands into the exuberant and perilous life of Santa Vittoria and its affirmation of the fundamental dignity of man.

Rivetingly Entertaining
Revisado: 12-28-24
I saw the movie as a kid an enjoyed it, but never read the book. The book is great. It was obviously far more detailed than the film and had many different twists and outcomes. The characters were compelling, interesting and believable. The narration was phenomenal and easy to listen to. I also learned a lot about Italy and the Italian mindset. Highly recommended!

Historia
In November 1941, Hitler ordered German forces to complete the final drive on the Soviet capital, now less than 100 kilometers away. Army Group Center was pressed into the attack for one last attempt to break Soviet resistance before the onset of winter. From the German perspective, the final drive on Moscow had all the ingredients of a dramatic final battle in the east, which, according to previous accounts, only failed at the gates of Moscow.

Revisado: 12-05-24
Part two in Stahel's trilogy of the 1941 phase of the Russo German war. Painstakingly researched, written and read entertainingly, these books put Stahel up there with David Glanz as the top historians of this conflict. I enjoyed the presentation as much as the content. This book is a must for any serious student of the "War in the East" and a necessary compliment to the earlier "Operation Typhoon". Am looking forward to listening to "Retreat from Moscow" next.

Historia
Dawn on Sunday, June 22, 1941 saw the opening onslaughts of Operation Barbarossa as German forces stormed forward into the Soviet Union. Few of them were to survive the five long years of bitter struggle. A posting to the Eastern Front during the Second World War was rightly regarded with dread by the German soldiers. They saw epic battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk, and yet it was a daily war of attrition which ultimately proved fatal for Hitler's ambition and the German military machine.

Interesting Deep Dive
Revisado: 07-10-24
Excellent compilation of the nitty gritty every day war of the German soldiers on the eastern front. Some may be upset that it doesn't mention atrocities but that was not the purpose of the book. Others have delved into crimes of the Wehrmacht and SS in detail. This held my interest and discussed the tactical war in the East.

Historia
War can settle disputes, topple tyrants, and bend the trajectory of civilization—sometimes to the breaking point. From Troy to Hiroshima, moments when war has ended in utter annihilation have reverberated through the centuries, signaling the end of political systems, cultures, and epochs. Though much has changed over the millennia, human nature remains the same. In The End of Everything, military historian Victor Davis Hanson narrates a series of sieges and sackings that span the age of antiquity to the conquest of the New World to show how societies descend into barbarism and obliteration.

The history was fascinating and edifying. It filled in quite a few holes for me. VDH is very detail oriented but this didn't keep the book from being very entertaining. the narrator was good. Occasionally a wee bit wooden, but he kept the flow and made no mispronounciations that addle some other history Audio books. Recommend this for folks who wish to learn about some great and terrible events from the past and have enough critical thinking to see the dangers we face today.

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Historia
A vivid and incisive portrait of Winston Churchill during wartime from acclaimed historian Max Hastings, Winston’s War captures the full range of Churchill’s endlessly fascinating character. At once brilliant and infuriating, self-important and courageous, Hastings’s Churchill comes brashly to life as never before. Beginning in 1940, when popular demand elevated Churchill to the role of prime minister, and concluding with the end of the war, Hastings shows us Churchill at his most intrepid and essential, when, by sheer force of will, he kept Britain from collapsing.

Historia
The left has corrupted the U.S. legal system. Wielding the law as a weapon, arrogant judges and lawless prosecutors are intimidating, silencing, and even imprisoning Americans who stand in the way of their radical agenda. Their "enemies list" even includes parents who dare to speak up for their children at school board meetings. In this shocking new book, Senator Ted Cruz takes listeners inside the justice system, showing how the wrong hands on the levers of power can strangle liberty, crush opposition, and wreck lives.

Excellent look at our absolutely corrupted justice system ranging from Nixon to Biden. It's well written, well researched and chilling. Senator Cruz is lucid and his descriptions are understandable even for novices who don't have lawyer's understanding of the law. Well done and well read. Recommend for anyone with an open mind.

In just four weeks in the summer of 1941 the German Wehrmacht wrought unprecedented destruction on four Soviet armies, conquering central Ukraine and killing or capturing three quarters of a million men. This was the Battle of Kiev - one of the largest and most decisive battles of World War II and, for Hitler and Stalin, a battle of crucial importance. For the first time, David Stahel charts the battle's dramatic course and aftermath.
