Historia
In June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection. At the time, the detective was a relatively new invention; there were only eight detectives in all of England and rarely were they called out of London, but this crime was so shocking that Scotland Yard sent its best man to investigate, Inspector Jonathan Whicher.

Decent outline, but hard to follow or retain
Revisado: 08-10-23
Since this book covers the history of much of the world for over 700 years, it is understandable that it will only contain the broadest outline of what happened. However, the author does not include any of the great stories which would make the reader remember anything after finishing the book. It felt like someone reading a list of facts.
Additionally, the narrator speaks too quickly, which makes it very difficult to follow what's going on. Even with slowing down the audio, I found myself repeatedly re-listening to the same passages to try to figure out what was happening.
Finally, I felt myself wondering how much of the book is accurate. In at least a few important occasions, the author states as fact why historical figures did things in the dim past, when I'm pretty sure there's no evidence to support her assertions.
I did not hate the book and had no problem finishing it. But it just seems like empty calories, something I won't remember a few week.

Historia
Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.

Stories evil people tell themselves
Revisado: 03-04-23
If you didn't know anything about history, after listening to this you would think the Germans just happened to be in Russia, the Germans nobly defended Russians against the Russians, and the Germans just wanted the war to end. It's disturbing that this author might actually believe his own story 50 years after the war.

Historia
Here is the story of how the English acquired their vast domain; how they ruled, maintained, and exploited it; and how, within decades, they presided over its dissolution. Here are Britain's triumphs and also her stinging defeats, her heroes and her scoundrels. It is a full and fascinating chronicle of the growth of the British Empire and its people and of the impact that empire had on the rest of the world.

Intersting but a little superficial
Revisado: 12-08-21
While it was well worth the listen and very interesting, the essays only give a cursory outline of their subjects. One gets no inside about what the Empire was like for the non white subjects, how the Empire effected anyone in England, or the economics of the empire.
