Love the series; this one is a little heavy handed

This series so far has been amazing; from the print only (so far) to the most recent. To date the heroes and heroines are distinct and while not as environmentally horror filled as old HP himself, most read as an adventure RPG should. That said, this volume is a little heavy handed with the “girls rule and boys drool” feminism that while present in some of the series, has been to date somewhat period appropriate and story appropriate. Unfortunately, it detracts from this installment as it went from a heroine that you could get behind, to a cross between a bad hallmark film and social engineering of the 2020’s not the 1920’s.

Strong women in the Arkham horror series have hitherto proven themselves amazing so by their actions not their social commentary, and the men did not (until this volume) need to qualify their competency with a minority status.

In all, while fun and engrossing as the previous volumes, this one is distracting with its asides and “gummy bear and unicorn” feel good hallmark moments stuck between the gross incompetence and blatant stupidity (or outright evil) of the male characters (not just entering puberty, or minority status).

I would recommend this to further the story previously told in the “mask of silver” (which did far better with character development and showcasing social issues) but not as a stand alone choice to sample this series.

Finally; a GW story that does not use a sledge hammer...

Like most folks who read this genera; I’ve been a fan of GW fiction since their first forays into novels. Over the years they have gone from good stories to ham fisted use of their product line. Instead of a description, they will just use the trade name of the creature and the story suffers for it. This was not the case in Deacon of Wounds. Despite it becoming more obvious as the book goes on, the writer left it to my imagination rather than codifying the bad guy. As a result, this story was a refreshing return to having imagination rather than codification.

Clearly more of a written justification for the contents of the boxed sets than a serious novel. The characters are all over the top in their interactions and the space marines come off as monk like high schoolers with the life experience of a gnat while the necrons make skaven look like they have their act together. Having read almost (almost) every book in the GW catalogue, I would opine that this was a ham-fisted last minute attempt at making another dime on a new edition as it was far worse than most of the other titles.

Once again Dan Abnett has rejuvenated the dogma of 40K lore that we have to be honest is sometimes as stale as the Imperium. This book is the Easter egg of Easter eggs for anyone who has been a devoted fan. The story was a series of one over the top revelation after another until the last page...at which point you began to hate Dan Abnett because you will have to wait for the next book.

I admit that a cross between 20’s pulp detective, samurai action, and supernatural horror seemed to be an unlikely mix; but it was one of the best books I have indulged in. The characters are amazing as is the atmosphere. If you are a fan of anything Lovecraft, or 20’s pulp this is your series.

I have been a fan of GW novels and games since the 80’s. I am truly not a fan of the recent conversion of the old world to something that looks like 40k, but is steampunk. That said, this was an excellent story with an excellent reader. The voice at first seems a little over done, but in time it grows on you. The story itself is in the old tradition, and was quite good as both a fantastic story and as horror fiction (left you wondering).

This was one of the first true Warhammer Horror books that GW has produced that was not a rehash of some older authors work “I.e. sad copy of masque of the red death renamed” a re-release of some 80s novel (those were good, but hardly original) or did not just come out and say what the horrific creature (or chaos god) was involved. This actually captured the fear of the unknown, even at the end you are questioning what was going on and what was the outcome. Excellent read.

I have read almost every single book written as part of the Black Library since the late 80’s. Most of them are excellent with but few exceptions. I’m not sure if Games Workshop has decided that since 40K is so popular they need to prop up their fantasy line with space marines, but this book was a ham fisted attempt to hide a 40K story behind a sad and repetitive space marine meets steampunk storyline. Bring back Gotrek or Brenner, or even the Wine of Dreams... it was all better than this rubbish. GW, you have once again given your souls in a pathetic run on the cash till. You should be ashamed considering the rich background your predecessors left you to squander. I cannot return this, not can I get back the 15 hours of my life I spent listening to it. I am sad that the voice actor, who was quite good tarnished his reputation with this collection of second string space marine stories that only lacked bolters.

If you want a great story of sword and sorcery, look elsewhere.

Sharpe with a bow...

Having burned through the entire Sharpes series by Bernard Cornwell I turned to some of his other works. This story is (as always) a great way to learn about a historical event through one who would have been there without having to cope with a long winded expert who is more interested in proving their mastery of minutiae.

I titled this review Sharpe with a Bow, because the main character is in all ways Richard Sharpe and his love interest runs the same gambits that Sharpes loves did. I expect that this is partially due to the fact that they are (despite some advancement) technologically close to each other and in both eras the pool of warriors for both the officer and grunt classes came from similar places with similar caste systems. That said, it does differ from the many Sharpes books in that it clearly paints a picture of the age in which it is set. Consider this minor criticism akin to noting that Harrison ford plays Harrison Ford no matter if he is Han Solo or Indiana Jones.

Finally, the reader is excellent and his voice acting is on point. The only thing that became annoying (and thus not 4 stars) was the music played during particular potions of import. This was far too loud, and I found myself straining to hear the reader as he was drowned by sometimes sci-fi music that was completely unnecessary.
