Some good stuff, but too Evangelical

I agree with his goals and the problems he discusses. The problem is that he still believes is the white, conservative Evangelical views of Biblical innerancy and univocality. This waters down the messages in the Bible and is not helpful in any way for convincing people that they are wrong. You cannot fight proof texts with proof texts.
As far as the performance goes, it was mostly good, but included several mispronunciations. Off the top of my head, he frequently pronounces "vehemently" as "va-hee-mently" and he pronounced the name of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus as "Hair-oh-doh-too." But this isn't a big issue.
Overall, he has some good stuff to say, but he's still too Evangelical and American.

This might be a good start for people who are just beginning to learn about systemic racism in America, but it shouldn't be the end. The solutions that Tisby recommends feel like the bare minimum that people should do, and also encourages people with white savior complexes. I'd recommend Subversive Witness by Dominique DuBois Gilliard as an alternative to this book with much better solutions to the deeper problems.

I wish Oliver Thomas would release a book for each of the ten points he makes in this book. I doubt there would be so many negative reviews from people calling this book "heresy" if those same people actually understood where Thomas was coming from.
Overall, I would recommend this book as a good starting point for people who have only ever known a conservative Fundamentalist version of Christianity. Afterwards, look up Peter Enns and Rachel Held Evans.

I took one star away for the charts and quizzes that others have mentioned in their reviews and another star for the self help bs language. Pushing past those two issues, the psychology in this book was very helpful for me. I'll be looking for other books on attachment theory in adults that go more into the science and avoid the self help bs, but this is a great start.

Good Stuff From Peter Enns, As Always

My only critique is that I wish this book had gone more in depth than it did. Pete writes books for "normal" people and for "abnormal" people. I wish he would also write books for those of us inbetween who aren't smart enough to go through all the education to become "abnormal" but are still nerdy enough to not be "normal." Otherwise, I'd say this is a really good book and I would recommend it.

This book in combination with Matthew Vines' God and the Gay Christian seem to me like a great starting point for Christians who want to be affirming of LGBTQ+ people but can't simply put the Bible aside. There's a lot more that needs to be done after reading these books, including repenting for our past roles in harming LGBTQ+ people, but they're a good first step.

He only repeats what he said in the youtube series. He doesn't elaborate at all. Not worth the money

Sex means something. It isn't "morally neutral" as Nadia Bolz-Weber claims. At the same time, the purity culture that dominated, and continues to dominate,, conservative Christianity has been extremely damaging to many people, including me. I bought this book after hearing Nadia on the podcast The Bible For Normal People. She clearly loves the Bible, so I was hoping for Biblical insight to how I could start to heal. Instead, she states her opinions on sex, without any Biblical, or Spirit based foundations while mixing in random Bible references. In the end, I used my monthly Audible credit only to end up just as lost as I was before listening to this book. Hopefully the book I get next month will be better.

That being said, it's an important topic that we need to discuss, and there is a degree of truth to this book. However, this truth is only a partial truth. Next, I will be listening to Immoral Majority by Ben Howe. His book is on the same topic, but from his perspective as a tea party conservative evangelical. I expect it to be just as biased, if not more, and just as full of partial truths. I'm hoping that I'll be able to piece together all of the partial truths to find the whole truth.

I was hoping for more Biblical examples and interpretations than self help. If self help books worked, there wouldn't be so many of them. I gave it a three because the part about the "God box" was good, despite the rest of the book.
