The immaturity of these characters was flooring...
Revisado: 08-24-23
Two characters, apparently adults, but more akin to undeveloped children lacking in common sense, emotional development, life experience, interests, language or desires outside of coffee, sex, gruffness, fist fights, cliches, snarling and complete simplicity. Oh and of course the town was called 'Knockemout'. This was 15 hours that could have been 7, or maybe 0. Oh my gosh, this was just a shockingly poor read / listen after all of the good reviews.

Sam's life is on track. She has the perfect doctor fiancé, Jack (his strict routines are a good thing, really), a stable job in Manhattan (unless they fire her), and is about to tour a wedding venue near her family's Long Island beach house (if only to appease her mother). Everything should go to plan, but the minute she arrives, Sam senses a disturbance in the force. Wyatt is here. Her Wyatt. But there's no reason for a thirty-year-old engaged woman to feel awkward around the guy who broke her heart when she was seventeen. Right?

Great story and perfect audio
Revisado: 06-30-23
Great summer listen plus more. I really enjoyed the protagonist, Sam's story of self discovery, intertwined with first love, chemistry, family, friendship and nostalgia. The author did a great job of building interesting, lovable characters in backdrops suiting the scenes. Lovely story.
Whilst I feel like I have read some bit of this story before, it was really captivating and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by Annabel Monaghan.

Dr Briana Ortiz's life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalised, her brother's running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants...? Oh, that's probably going to the new man-doctor who's already registering eighty-friggin'-seven on Briana's 'pain in my ass' scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr Jacob Maddox completely flips the game...by sending Briana a letter. It's a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn't actually Satan.

Another great Abby Jiminez book… but could the characters just have a basic conversation a little earlier?
Revisado: 05-01-23
I really enjoy Abby Jiminez’s books, have read all of her published works and would recommend them all. I would put this book in that category too and was really looking forward to its release. It was however the first during which there were parts that dragged.
Briana and Jacob become great friends and it is clear that they are a perfect match together. There are challenges with anxiety, family health issues, past relationships and entertaining family dynamics which are different for Abby Jiminez and form a great story. However, the miscommunication between Briana and Jacob and the overthinking of situations lasts for the entire book, becoming tiresome in parts. Whilst a core part of the story, it drags on at times to the point of frustration.
In saying that, I am still rating ‘Your Truly’ 3.75 stars for the character development, the overall story and Abby’s writing. Looking forward to reading her next book.

Historia
Every day at 8:05, Iona Iverson boards the train to go to work. Every day, she sees the same people and makes assumptions about them, even giving them nicknames. But they never speak. Obviously. Then, one morning, Smart-but-Sexist-Surbiton chokes on a grape right in front of Iona. Suspiciously-Nice-New Malden steps up to help and saves his life, and this one event sparks a chain reaction. With nothing in common but their commute, an eclectic group of people learn that their assumptions about each other don't match reality.

A cute story with strangers learning from each other in unexpected ways
Revisado: 03-21-23
A cute story with strangers learning from each other in unexpected ways. A remotely plausible plot, interesting, evolved characters and enough twists to keep the reader engaged. Recommended for a quick, relatively light read or well executed audible listen. 3.75 rounded up.

Historia
When Katy's mother dies, she is left reeling. Carol wasn't just Katy's mum, but her best friend and first phone call. She had all the answers, and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone. To make matters worse, the mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: two weeks in Positano, the magical town where Carol spent the summer before she met Katy's father. Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone. But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother's spirit.

Simple character with no evolution
Revisado: 03-17-23
When Katy loses her mother, she loses her best friend and everything she knows in the world. She chooses this time to ruthlessly discard her husband as she could love no one more than her dead mother and no one could possibly understand her grief; grief which is not really felt in the writing but but rather stated as a form of martyrdom and teenage immaturity.
Katy goes on holiday to Italy, has a series of experiences that her mother would have had earlier in her own life, realises that her mother (shock, horror) had a life beyond her daughter and then grieves about this. It is quite hard to feel for Katy as she is such a simple, small minded character.
I felt that this book was quite in contrast to what I expected and instead of an evolution of the protagonist, moving forward with her life, having new experiences, perhaps exploring Italy; it was an entire book devoted to how much she missed her mother. Additionally and surprisingly, the narration was flat and dry and added to the monotony of the book.
I quite liked ‘In Five Years’ but I’m done after this one.

Hannah's got a bad feeling about this. Not only has the NASA aerospace engineer found herself injured and stranded at a remote Arctic research station—but the one person willing to undertake the hazardous rescue mission is her longtime rival. Ian has been many things to Hannah: the villain who tried to veto her expedition and ruin her career, the man who stars in her most deliciously lurid dreams...but he's never played the hero. So why is he risking everything to be here?

Going by the same formula
Revisado: 03-15-23
This was my 3rd Ali Hazelwood book and I loved the 1st 2. Below Zero however, whilst also well written, started to feel more formulaic. There’s a very set theme and formula in Ali’s books and given that she is clearly a talented writer, I wish she would deviate slightly in it between novels, knowing that readings are consuming more than one of her books.
The deviation in Below Zero is that the female protagonist is lacking confidence in her ability to be in a relationship, whilst maintaining her confidence in her academic and work pursuits. The male however is described in the exact same repetitive way as every male protagonist in Hazelwood’s books. Really hoping this evolves in her next full length novel. No more novellas for me.

Historia
As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else's food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she's the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt's house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch, tempting respectable scientists to the dark side.

Cute read
Revisado: 03-11-23
3.75 stars rounded up. Fairly predictable but another sweet, easy read from Ali Hazelwood, following a similar method to her other novels. Cute, easy to read, nice characters, simple plot, well developed, not vapid, a good option for a nice read in between heavier options.

Historia
It is a strange paradox that many of the clearest, most comforting life lessons are learned while we are at our lowest. But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry, and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard. The Comfort Book is a collection of consolations learned in hard times and suggestions for making the bad days better.

Akin to ramblings from a diary
Revisado: 03-09-23
The author Matt Haig has managed to have published what would be, for anyone else, a series of dot notes and ramblings in a diary. This includes favourite songs, reasons why Ferris Bueller was a great movie, movies to see when depressed to uplift one's self (including any Mission Impossible movie because of watching Tom Cruise contort himself), interspersed with tiny bits of 'wisdom' which were similar to quotes that might be found on social media platforms.
Haig writes of the depressed times that he has gone through in the past, almost as justification for the writings in the book and certainly, there may be some wisdom in there for some readers. However, I feel that most of it caters for those with limited attention and looking for quick one liners.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities, I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I’ve recorded and can’t wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

An exceptional autobiography by a very talented man
Revisado: 02-23-23
What a fantastic book! I’m so glad that I listened to Dave Grohl’s autobiography as an audiobook as it allowed me to hear it in his spoken word, listening to his exact sentiment behind each story which I think added a lot to the book.
Whether in audio or paperback format though, this was an exceptional book by a very talented man. Dave Grohl has a gift with words as well as music and rhythm and it played out in this book. What a life he has had and continues to lead.
