Historia
Daniel Abe, a young doctor in Chicago, is finally coming back to Hawai'i. He has his own reason for returning to his childhood home, but it is not to revisit the past, unlike his Uncle Koji. Koji lives with the memories of Daniel’s mother, Mariko, the love of his life, and the scars of a life hard-lived. He can’t wait to see Daniel, who he’s always thought of as a son, but he knows the time has come to tell him the truth about his mother, and his father.

Well developed characters I came to love
Revisado: 01-25-25
Another Gail Tsukiyama story I thoroughly enjoyed. Well developed likable characters with depth. I found it difficult to put down and tougher to finish reading because I grew attached to the characters and their rich culture .

Historia
In modern-day Tokyo, Robin Swann's life has sputtered to a stop. She's stuck in a dead-end job testing antiquities for an auction house, but her true love is poetry, not pottery. Her stalled dissertation sits on her laptop, unopened in months, and she has no one to confide in but her goldfish. On the other side of town, Nori Okuda sells rice bowls and tea cups to Tokyo restaurants, as her family has done for generations. But with her grandmother in the hospital, the family business is foundering. Nori knows if her luck doesn't change soon, she'll lose what little she has left.

Beautifully written, good character development- I grew very fond of most of the characters. Interesting cultural journey, enjoyed the different time periods blended into the story. Hard to put down, suspenseful toward the conclusion. Wonderful story and narration.
I was disappointed that I could not find another book on audible by this talented author- I am hoping for another soon!

Incredible sharing of wisdom
Revisado: 11-10-24
Beth Kempton provides an incredible sharing of wisdom in this book. After reading her Wabi Sabi, which I also loved, I was yearning for more. Fortunately, this book was published soon after. After some time in Japan, I was really wanting to read more about their beautiful culture and philosophies.
Once again, she provided me with just what I needed in order to consider and comprehend what is important to me in life and how I would like to move forward on my path with what I learned. I love the way she guides so that I can reach within to find and hear my own inner guidance.
In addition, Beth’s writing is beautiful, like talking with a favorite friend, and her lovely voice is so soothing.

Historia
The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese father, Gail Tsukiyama uses the Japanese invasion of China during the late 1930s as a somber backdrop for her unusual story about a 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen who is sent to his family's summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu's secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight.

Wonderful story with characters I grew to love
Revisado: 08-27-24
I loved everything about this book except the fact that it had to end. I could have listened to so much more about the lives of these characters I had grown so fond of.
Japanese culture, past and present, is something I have become interested in since my last trip there this Spring. I have read Memoirs of a Geisha, Shogun, Wabi Sabi , and this book since my return. I only hope I can find another that I can enjoy as much as this one.

I found that this story started out slowly, But once it picks up it is difficult to put down- or hit the pause button. An excellent and complex story with many surprises. Just hang in there through the beginning.

Historia
Two girls survive a terrible flood in the Tasmanian bush and are rescued by a pair of Tasmanian tigers who raise them in the wild. Their story of survival is remarkable, as they adapt to the life of the tiger, learning to hunt and to communicate without the use of human language. When they are discovered and returned to civilization, neither can adapt to being fully human after their extraordinary experience. Totally believable, their story will both shock and captivate listeners as it explores the animal instincts that lie beneath our civilized veneer.

Fascinating tale
Revisado: 03-07-15
Fascinating tale which reveals the amazing ability of humans to be flexible and adapt in order to survive and even find happiness in any situation.
Living with wild beasts became A simple existence different from the human existence and yet one in which happiness was available.
It was actually sad when the girls were found. They were not able to obtain the same sense of happiness in the world of humans.
This story was deep on so many levels. It stimulates a great deal of thought and contemplation about humans, animals, relationship, will to survive, love between humans and animals, the way humans view and treat animals who have as much right to live as we do, and many more philosophical and ethical questions.
The voice and language of the character was appropriate and brought the character to life.
