Why has one of the key military figures who made Israeli history, General Matti Peled, decided - after the 1967 war - to devote the rest of his life advocating for the Palestinian people's human rights and civil rights, and their right to self-determination as an autonomous nation? The answers are revealed by his son, Miko, with clarity and details, some of which are shocking.

To me, this book presents a reliable and informed narrative about the controversial "creation" of modern Israel, why it is more akin to a colonial enterprise modeled on anachronistic European colonial powers, where the Indigenous population is vilified and crushed by a military occupation, with crimes against humanity, amid the world obscene silence.

Miko Peled introduces us to the maddening ambiguity of a conflict which explores the question - is modern Israel the only democracy in the Middle-East?

Highly recommended!

I listened to this book in about 3 sittings. The content is clearly presented, many historical facts have been documented before while others were new to me. Munther Isaac's narrative radiates meekness and reality, and a genuine love of neighbor, whomever they are, without falling into the syrupy tunnel vision we so often hear from Christians when they talk about Israel, surely an Israel they know very little about. Certainly growing in the West Bank would give someone a completely different perspective.

Isaac addresses some of the most serious fallacies, lies, slanders and fabrications surrounding myth about the holy land and the people who live there, on both sides of the wall. Particularly beneficial was how he presented some of the daily realities of being bot a Palestinian and a Christian, in a Muslim and Jewish majority.

Many may find surprisingly helpful and liberating the parts where he looks at some of the myths surrounding Christian eschatology involving Israel, following them to their logical conclusions. We have been taught wrongly by western teachers about a land and its people in light of God's plan of redemption.

To the religious critics who may wander here - there is not a single antisemitic sentiment expressed or suggested by the author of The Other Side of the Wall, He addresses his readers (listeners) as adults living in a complex world and able to challenge and gain awareness.

I loved this book! I foresee myself listening to it again multiple times, something made easy by the outstanding performance of the reader Neil Shah. And I'll look forward to more works by this author to land on Audible.

Think about it: Pentecost, local people and from all over the region and beyond. The Church expanded exponentially, under Roman military occupation and apartheid, evangelism, conversions, then the destruction of Jerusalem and exodus of Jewish people, including disciples.

So, who remained in the land for centuries to till and build and farm and population? The non-Jewish population. For nearly 2,000 years. This means that some of the present-day Palestinians are descendants from the early Church disciples.

QUOTE FROM HISTORY (dot com): "Throughout history, Palestine has been ruled by numerous groups, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Fatimids, Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Egyptians and Mamelukes.

From about 1517 to 1917, the Ottoman Empire ruled much of the region.

When World War I ended in 1918, the British took control of Palestine. The League of Nations issued a British mandate for Palestine—a document that gave Britain administrative control over the region, and included provisions for establishing a Jewish national homeland in Palestine—which went into effect in 1923."

So it is the Palestinians who have suffered the brutality of ruthless and racist regimes for millennia, all the way back to many centuries BC. Who better to teach us, Christians, to love, than Christian Palestinians devoted to following Christ in one of the most mind-bending and heartbreaking social prison as living under an apartheid regime? Just like their ancestors did for centuries?

I hope the Church as a whole will gain wisdom and understanding, and we can find ways to support - without violence but with courage - our brothers and sisters living on the other side of the wall. They are writing us, calling us, waving at us, pleading to God that we will hear and pray, and learn the truth about them. Let it be so.

GET THIS BOOK! :) Get it for the sheer education of it, for the insights and the paradigm shifts.

THE POWER OF STORIES: REACHING THE HEART

Changing people's mind comes more naturally when the heart is moved by real life stories.

If you need me to understand, don't just throw numbers and statistics at me: tell me your story and I will listen. In her book (memoir) Patrisse shares a world filled with both sorrows and deep love, yet one of rich vulnerability and community. I wished I were part of that world for the beauty of love flowing between them, but it came with a life lived on thin ice.

Christians they are, and she describes a true inspiring account of lives constantly in collision with a system of law enforcement that has absolute monsters, from the street to the courts, into the prison system and healthcare system.

Most of all I share her sense of urgency that things change. We are witnessing history in the making, and invited to change in a way that would transform our North American societies.

I however had a lot of resistance to the recent events involving inhuman police brutality toward George Floyd, and the ensuing mayhem, including destruction and violence, even personal attacks, and a few deaths caused by an undercover policeman, and by others among the Antifa movement whose involvement to me is damaging the BLM movement's campaign. But that is a personal view that also needs to grow.

I'm grateful to Patrisse's for her amazing character, integrity, empathy in action. Her book helped me understand her quest, and allows me to join the cry of Black Lives Matter. And I am reminded of the VAST number of books, movies, interviews, testimonies of black people about their lives under a kind of apartheid, still today. We are blessed to have their accounts and reports. But I personally hadn't paid enough attention to the urgency of the situation. I regret it very much.

It's a shame to our societies that Indigenous culture around the world, almost without exception, still suffer from the near genocide, massacres, displacement, isolation and harassment. And this is true universally. In light of this, it is not rhetorical for them to use the terms "end colonialism," and "white supremacy."

Just consider the legacy of the British empire around the world. It is resolutely anti-Indigenous. I also recommend Making America Great Again by Rev David Moore, which I'm listening to right now.

I am revising my previous review after listening to the audiobook a second time (not sure why it's not available anymore). If like me you found the references to morning rituals at first unsettling, try substituting your own personal favorites to them. The strength of the book is in its proven record in genuinely and successfully wrestling away the trauma of the white page away from paralyzing anxiety and overblown expectations. And what it teaches can be applied to any art form. Do not miss on this short but experienced-packed book!

Very difficult topic, well documented and expanded. However, after a few hours it felt like a hammer hitting me on the head, I was waiting for some "good" news, but I feel more discouraged about my condition the more I listen. I'm sure the author is not intending to do so, but to inform well so we know what we're dealing with. I'll be looking for encouragement in connected fields of therapy and personal development. Still, I recommend this book.
