I have heard so much about this series, but boy did the characters feel superficial. It felt more like a high school drama and many hours of listening before the characters started to “mean something” to me. Hoping for a better book two.

An author that can make me care whether Nesta lives or dies is an amazing work of fiction.

In many series, there is a character that you may like to hate. Sometimes the protagonist sometimes the sidekick. Rarely have I disliked a “member of the good team,” more. Yet, here I am getting a little teary over Nesta’s character journey and thinking Feyre is again the more flat character. Not since the early days of Feyre falling for every protector for the first few books.

To the publisher: why would you change narration? Had this voice actor performed the whole series, would the reviews be so bad? Is it change or is it performance? I do not mean to be critical of the performer, however, when readers become familiar and attached to the way a character sounds or the way a performer switches voices, we hate change.

A masters level class distilled into one book

I love how Charles ties seemingly random stories into evidence without changing the facts to meet the narrative. There is an art to the way the case studies build and tie as if they were characters in a plot arch. This echoes much of what my education and pedagogy classes offered but with a corporate twist that resonated with me. Perhaps I need to bring the connections protocol to my workplace and other tools of education reform to professional learning communities. Well done Mr Duhigg

Even better and deeper than the first.

The story arc, the characters, and the literary device usage is unmatched in today’s fiction. At times, I feel this takes turn hitting everything I want in a book. At times, it feels like a history tether than a fiction, as if these characters existed in a forgotten era. Then others, it is an emotional and psychological roller coaster. It is fantastic.

What a great and interesting slice of genre. In some some cases, I feel like it is young adult or fantasy but in others romance and adult. Dark characters and plots but yet not overly blue. Well done.

I bet this was groundbreaking in 2021

I am not sure I have been more let down by a highly rated book. I train in Vr weekly. I train remotely for years now. I wish half the book was not trying to convince people to be on camera and teaching a basic training and facilitation course.

Disappointing. That last chapter could have been something. But how will they know you are “camera ready at all times” if in VR? Come to sell my gravy dot com for a line of watches for your avatar.

Over a decade in, they cannot all be 5’s

I wonder if I read this book first. I wonder if the me that was more than ten years ago read this book would be as critical of it. This story did not feel the same. It had components and moments and yes the overall arch of the characters moved on. It feels similar to when another great author who wrote a spy novel universe with fanatic history based fiction teamed up to co-write spin-offs and eventually the main universe story line.
This one felt stripped down, less JDRobb romance, less futuristic fiction, less “what will life be like in those years”, less Mavis, less Eve’s human side.
Here’s hoping for September.

Passing of the torch

I enjoy the Flynn novels and Mills does a great job. There is something that seems too orchestrated and a step towards formulaic as this series moves on. Is it the passing of the torch to a new author? I do not know but the story seemed different and predictable.

Getting to be a formula.

I love this series but it is time to take a break. The storyline is getting formulaic. Richard lives by his power doing something really amazing and not seen before. His gift saves the day without explanation and without the ability to repeat.

Meanwhile, here is 64 chapters of backstory on a people that might be important for a book or two. Now, here are 2 heartpounding chapters of climax. Ohh, and chapters here at the end to wrap up a few loose ends.

Next.

Still a fan but I think I will take a few months off before revisiting this series.
