The material was drawn from BBC broadcasts, as advertised, but unedited so that each episode started and stopped as if the radio had been switched on just in time for the show and off at the very moment it ended (and sometimes a little bit before). There was nothing to introduce the episodes, or anything about the dates of transmission. Everything was rushed to meet the 20-minute limit of the original radio shows. As an Audible product, that should be entirely unnecessary.
The panelists could only be described as stuffy academics. Their presentations were unstructured, and they interrupted each other so that important details went unexplained, and much was left unsaid or incomplete. And it certainly did not sound as if any of them believed in anything they were saying.

I most appreciated the short essay on the Beguines.

The narrator mispronounced an astonishingly wide array of words in every language, including English. And at such a lumbering pace I had to set the playback speed to 1.10. Why such incompetence should be tolerated is beyond me.

A silly dream of adulthood and love, with no real character development or meaningful conflict resolution. Read by someone who sounded like either a teeny-bopper or an automaton. Very little exploration of the magical dimension. Just the thing for fans of made for tv romance movies.

A thorough pleasure to listen to from start to finish. Penric's & Desdemona's family continues to grow under the dubious guardianship of the White God.

The novel had poor pacing, a silly premise, and an unbelievably obtuse main character. Most irritating of all was the author's threadbare understanding of 1920s England. I kept wondering if the author thought that reading a few PG Wodehouse novels and binge-watching "Downton Abbey," would provide the necessary depth of knowledge.

Plot was only okay; prose was ponderous & sophomoric; character development was miniscule. It all went on for much too long. Reader was acceptable.

Too bad I used up a credit for 31 hrs and 42 mins of inferior writing and barely tolerable narration. Not one character in this story was in the least bit likeable. None of them moved from their initial states: they learned nothing about themselves, they continued in their dysfunctional relationships with no improvement, and reacted in the same predictably unproductive way to every challenge. From the blandly generic descriptions of the locales, the reader/listener could be forgiven for not recognizing the American Midwest as the scene of the action. Speaking of action, it was stilted and confused, full of plodding violence, formulaic "romantic" encounters, and repetitive magical confrontations that settled nothing. The initial plot premise held up okay in the first book, wore thin by the middle of the second book, and was in shreds by the beginning of the third ... and there's a fourth one still to go! With truly unappealing characters, boring narrative, and a ponderous plot, I doubt I'll listen to the end.

This is an entertaining, earnest story of how much hard work it takes to be different while accepting of others' difference. I especially appreciated the proprietor of the One Stop, who made hospitality her guiding principle. The novel nicely expands the Wayfarer universe, adding some characters you wouldn't mind knowing, and revealing some more of the complications of the Galactic Commons.

"Anansi Boys" is a lot of fun and one of Neil Gaiman's best works. It has the humor, depth, and heart to make reading it always a pleasure. Lenny Henry brings "Anansi Boys" to an entirely new level of enjoyment with his dozens of voices and accents that I could not even begin to imagine. Listening to his performance is like attending a one-man show. This production of "Anansi Boys" is definitely among the top 10 in my 400+ title Audible library.

John Julius Norwich's excellent history of Sicily does not deserve this kind of treatment. The narrator, Michael Healy, failed miserably at pronouncing not only just about every foreign word and place name, but some English ones as well. If that kind of thing bothers you as much as it does me, then I recommend you read this book for yourself and give this audio version a pass.
