Historia
Hawaii, 1941. War clouds with Japan are gathering and the islands of Hawaii have become battlegrounds of spies, intelligence agents, and military officials - with the island's residents caught between them. Toiling in the shadows are Douglas Wada, the only Japanese American agent in naval intelligence, and Takeo Yoshikawa, a Japanese spy sent to Pearl Harbor to gather information on the U.S. fleet.

Would be better read than heard
Revisado: 02-10-25
Great history lesson. From my perspective with the Japanese names it would have been easier for me to keep track of who they were talking about if I had the impression of the name in my mind in words. I understood more when I listened on my computer and put on closed caption. I do not want to diminish the quality of the book, that's just my impression. Very good information and interesting details for any history buff, but I would suggest reading rather than listening.

Great review of history that I lived through as a child
Revisado: 11-15-24
I know it took place over many years, but this retelling seemed to go on and on. It was great for me to reassess my opinion of some of the leaders that were in power during my childhood such as Ross Perot. I also lost some respect for President Johnson and his disrespect and lack of empathy for those in the war. Reminded me of how insignificant women were as individuals back in the 60’s and 70’s. These women were different, but when their men came home, they returned to the traditional rolls of their time.

Kind of like a TV PI who is indestructible - that’s who McKenzie is. Sometimes there’s so many characters it’s hard to follow. Overall, pretty good mysteries.

Historia
Since becoming an unlikely millionaire and quitting the St. Paul Police Department, Rushmore McKenzie has been working as an unlicensed private investigator. But even for him, this latest job is unusual. He’s been asked to find a stolen Stradivarius, known as the Countess Borromeo, that only the violinist seems to want him to find. It was stolen from a locked room in a B&B in the violinist’s former hometown of Bayfield, Wisconsin. For McKenzie, helping means going against the local police, the insurance company, the FBI’s Art Crime division, and his own lawyer’s advice.

Revisado: 03-15-24
As usual, I love to revisit places I know from the stories of McKenzie. I liked some of the reoccurring characters and their personalities like Heavenly. I always learn something new about my Twin Cities, and enjoy the mysteries which are not too gruesome for my taste.

Too long. Really not a happy ending for the main character as she described it. The story left me wondering about some of the historical facts like the code of the hobos.

Since the story didn’t take place in the Twin Cities, it wasn’t of as much interest to me. I enjoy when the stories take place in the Twin Cities and learn the history of Minneapolis and St. Paul and suburbs. Sometimes it’s hard to follow who’s who, but I can backtrack. On to the next one

Historia
Rushmore McKenzie, a retired St. Paul policeman and unexpected millionaire, often works as an unlicensed PI, doing favors as it suits him. When two graduate students show up with a story about $8 million in missing stolen gold from the ’30s, McKenzie is intrigued. In the early 20th century, St. Paul, Minnesota, was an open city - a place where gangsters could stay unmolested by the local authorities. Frank “Jelly” Nash was suspected of masterminding a daring robbery of gold bars in 1933, but, before he could unload it, he was killed in the Kansas City Massacre.
