This super funny take on the superhero genre actually manages to be critical of social issues, break literary tropes, and genuinely make you laugh.

This book has an ambitious premise and is a good read overall. Folks who are not familiar with Bova's earlier works may feel a little lost in the references to events from previous novels and may find character's motivations and mentality to be too quick or unilateral, but this is the universe that Bova has set up, one where politicians and public figures are primarily motivated by greed, desire to control, and their own egos rather than a sense of public service meeting offset by scientists, who, although flawed, ultimately seek to find new knowledge and better humanity somehow. in that sense, it approximates reality more often than fiction, but if you don't know the Bovaverse at least a little bit, you might miss some of that.

Great book. incredible attention to detail and use of communications and technology to build tension and create drama. Even some of the slightly dated bits (no smartphones, etc) are quaintly ironic in that it's really more about people's lack of communication or empathy rather than the kind of devices Bova envisioned. Readers should know that this has stereotypes, idioms, and some imagery that maybe wouldn't pass muster today in terms of cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness, but those elements actually work to show how racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, and intolerance make ignorant, hateful people (and sometimes the "good guys") think and behave.

This is great, full of nostalgic flare, but also new life and a definitely modern vibe. I've listened to it at least a half dozen times!

It's like poetry.
A conversation with the stranger in one's self.
I want more, of course.
More and more.
Until I can't remember what wanting felt like.
Listen.

The plot is a little predictable, but the performances are excellent. This is a good casual listen for a long drive or a rainy afternoon. Fans of the genre might find more in it to sink their teeth into ;)

Not afraid to take on big questions, Stephenson manages to create a grand epic that still feels visceral and personal. Anyone who is interested in internet culture and technology in society has to read/listen to this book.

This is one of my favorite science fiction novels and now one of my favorite audiobooks.
The themes and the writing as superb, as is to be expected from Niven and Pournelle, and despite what other reviewers might say, the narration is also excellent; a mix between dramatization and plain reading that adds a layer of interest and helps differentiate the many characters in the story.
