Historia
At a time when the edge of American settlement barely reached beyond the Appalachian Mountains, two visionaries, President Thomas Jefferson and millionaire John Jacob Astor, foresaw that one day the Pacific would dominate world trade as much as the Atlantic did in their day. Just two years after the Lewis and Clark expedition concluded in 1806, Jefferson and Astor turned their sights westward once again. Thus began one of history's dramatic but largely forgotten turning points in the conquest of the North American continent.

History and TOUGH people
Revisado: 01-28-25
A chronicle of the history and superhuman difficulty of exploring a passage to the northwest to establish an outpost for trading furs. Moreover, the initiative, vision and huge financing of John Astor to attempt make riches from the fur trade. But not to be overlooked, is the history of native Americans who had long established lives and communities. One really has to think about European “manifest destiny” treatment of indigenous peoples throughout North America. One might think of it as the Holocaust before The Holocaust.

Historia
In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

What you don’t know about Jan. 6th
Revisado: 06-27-24
For all that you saw and think you know about what happened that fateful day, you know less than half of it. Chaney’s book connects the dots lays it all out in with all the details. She was there for the painful and scary full catastrophe, and interviewed all the perpetrators. She saw the strong, the cowards, the liars, and the sycophants. This book is history.

This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen.

A gripping recount of what our boys and men went through to serve our country
Revisado: 09-07-22
Many of the events put a lump in your throat and moisten eyes when you think of the human factor of boys and men working in a war with high explosives in their sub or depth charges being hurled at them.
Months at sea in a 27x160’ hot sweaty tube with no personal space. There is glory in victory but no glory in the battle. Hard tough work and sacrifice beyond what we can imagine today.
I wished the book could have looked a little more at the lives of the enlisted sailors as they went about taking the sub to the heights of accomplishment.
Sub sailors, especially in WWII equipment were amazing for what they accomplished … for us.

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Outstanding History of Southwest
Revisado: 07-27-21
I read this book once and ordered the audiobook to listen the second time. And I will probably listen to it a third time. I got so much more out of it listening than when I read the book. I heard things that I did not remember reading. To me the importance of this book is that it chronicles the transition from a West of predominately native Americans to the inclusion of Spanish/Mexicans to the imposition of Eastern Americans as the U.S. expanded into the Southwest. It is as objective a history as I could imagine showing the good and bad sides of the characters and ethnic groups. It seems to present the information factually and without value judgements. Those judgements are left to the reader, and there are plenty to be made. The leading character is Kit Carson and the dichotomy of his significant participation in the expansion of the Southwest.

Historia
Previously published as Horse Soldiers, 12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.

The Ultimate Reality Adventure
Revisado: 04-09-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Horse Soldiers to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version but the audio retelling is spectacular. One can only imagine that this is the adventure of a lifetime for the soldiers in the story--those that survive. What else in their lives will ever give them a rush like this experience. You want to hear more adventures but are chasened by the knowledge that these adventures are truely real and cost lives.
What did you like best about this story?
The story was true to news accounts during that time thus we have more agreement with history than disagreement. That validates the story as told.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Horse Soldiers of 9/11
Any additional comments?
Most of us have adventures of our youth to remember but Horse Soldiers is certainly at a new level, a level most of us never get to These soldiers brought training, skills, heart, pain and perseverance to bear for their country--for us. This, is the real thing! Young people in search of advenure should read this book and think about whether they could, or even want to, perform at that level. That could help them with the decision, "what do I want to do when I grow up."

Need More Truman-Both in Book and Real Life
Revisado: 04-09-13
What made the experience of listening to Truman the most enjoyable?
Truman gave me far more insight into the makeup of the man and the principles in which he made decisions. He didn't suffer from reading the polls. He didn't have a great political agenda but he did have princilples, practicality and non political experience which provided the context for his decisions. A very common man, he was not given to self aggrandizement . Characteristics in rare evidence since Truman except for perhaps Regan.
What does David McCullough bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
McCullough brings the emotion of understanding the story and the passion developed from his writing and research. You can't beat that.
Any additional comments?
I found myself wanting to hear more about Truman, the decisions he made and the events. Only then did I discover that I had downloaded the abridged edition. Next time, "the whole enchalada."
