I liked the set up but once the main character starts on their path to villiony it all becomes arbitrarily pointless.

An I treating premis and has some tones of satire on the genre but dosnt have any deep insights beyond that. the magic is very soft, as are all the challenges and combat. most of the book is writen in summery as well which takes away most of the tension

earth concored, military play pirates<priviteers, aliens basically people in rubber suits. tone is judgemental but mostly not picking people's little choices and not much on a higher level.

decently polished, and the characters arnt annoying (although the revenge and blood thirsty path made me roll my eyes more then a few times) but I finished the book still hungry. Not I want more hungry but I ate all that cotton candy and am still unsatisfied hungry. none of the characters changed, there was no stakes or challenge, I gained no insights. I need more than cotton candy, and if the Arthur has enough skill and dedication to make this much cotton candy I can only hope someone buys him a cookbook eventually.

this book is an admirable attempt to copy the greats with out understanding what was going on under the surface that made them great.
it has decently polished prose in an intriguing world that checks a lot of the genre's I like. the characters seem writen to exemplify tropes more than for story reasons but I can forgive that. I can not forgive the author for screwing up the tension every single time he puts an obstacle in the protagonists path (all of which arbitrarily come out of nowhere, and are solved just as arbitrarily by the first idea that pops into the protagonists head). this pattern means there are few long term goals for the protagonists to presue (not that he does anything proactive about those) and leaves the reader to be dragged from moment to moment and easily disoriented or worse not emotionally tied to anything about the story.

I am a sucker for this genre but the author bairly does anything with actually using modern knowledge in the past. he makes like 1 invention but all the chalanges are off the page and not actively tackled. the plot is also stretched really thin with a single 3 bullet point arc having to last for the whole book. dispute all that the prose are solid

I like all of the elements of the story and don’t have a problem with the characters per say but the characterization was so stereotypical I couldn’t listen to more then a few minutes at a time with out putting the book down. All the prose was written like the author was trying to imitate what a classic epic fantasy should sound like with out going any deeper.

The tone of this book is it's best quality. it is constantly upbeat snarky and go-getting/exasperated at problems not emo about them. the story is just under 2 hours long though and sadly the author doesn't seem to write with the same tone in all his other works. so once it's done you will have to search long and hard for something similar.

The magic system was unique but not groundbreaking. The prose were decent and didn’t show any amateurish awkwardness which was nice. The main character was a marry sue though. The first idea that came into his head just happened to be a ground breaking advancement of magic. Every time. He never faced a chalange he couldn’t Waltz out of with some new trick he’d never practiced but would work smoothly. every stranger he talked to happened to have altruistic interests. He was also sickeningly virtuous.

a good filler book

This is a good book. it has an interesting cast and dose a good job of showing the different styles of fighting, making them believable and interesting. it even does a good job with his life training playing with tension as much as can be done with ranger school. the only real problem is it doesn't try to do any more. will has very little personal drama to deal with other then his training. even when the climax comes it is generic bad guys who he defeats and not anyone connected to him personally. i misses the normal present extra element, but it is still a good book. it doesn't try to take on more and be a great book but not every book can be one of the best by the very definition of the phrase.
