Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

So moving - a great great listen!
Revisado: 05-29-20
An epic and touching tale that spans decades and dovetails beautifully at the end. Well-written characters that will stay with you long after the book is finished. A very emotional - brought me to laughter and to tears at times. The narration was amazing.
Do yourself a favor and buy this...it is beautiful and more than worth a credit!

A beautiful and terrifying love story.
Revisado: 01-19-16
Yes, it's a love story - but don't let that deter you. This book is absolutely riveting and captivating. It is a tale of good versus evil and of destiny and has mind-blowing twists and turns. It will appeal to Sci-Fi and horror fans, of which I am one. I couldn't stop listening! I don't want to give away any plot elements because I went in cold and it was a wild ride. Very good narration by the author.
I bought the collected work and it's 12 + hours of listening gold. Don't miss this one. I just can't say enough good things about it.

Historia
Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Gripping story...couldn't stop listening!
Revisado: 01-10-16
A mysterious stone sculpture of a man appears in a busy public square one pleasant afternoon. At first it seems like a performance art piece of some sort, causing curiosity and wonder in the crowd. Then it starts to walk, and the story just takes off from there and leads you on a relentless journey of twists and turns that you will not expect. The implications of what the Stone Man represents are far reaching and thought provoking. Interesting POV narration adds to the mystery, and the conclusion ties it all together quite nicely. Placed in an impossible situation, the narrator forms a bond with a stranger and together they are forced to deal with circumstances beyond their control. The characters are very well written and very human, and you cannot help but put yourself in their shoes - what would you do?
This is one of the best books I've listened to on Audible. It was a blind buy and I am very glad I took the plunge and discovered Luke Smitherd! He is an author to look for. You won't regret giving this one a try.

Worth the listen!
Revisado: 04-23-14
I see that a lot of people who have submitted reviews are put off by the subject matter of this story. It is disturbing and horrifying, to be sure. But, if you can make it through that, you will hear a beautiful, haunting, and moving story. I cried at the end. I have read one other novel from this author, and Braunbeck is a very talented writer. Please do not let the descriptive narrations throw you off; it all pays off at the end. I liked the narrator quite a bit - he is very good and has a wonderful moment toward the end. All in all, a terrific story, seemingly hopeless but in the end very redeeming.

Historia
Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.

This book will stay with you!
Revisado: 09-03-12
A very interesting way to tell a story, and the narrator does a fantastic job. This is a very disturbing tale about a family gone terribly wrong. All told from the mother's perspective in the form of letters to the father, it gets more and more addictive the further it gets along. Part cautionary tale and part mystery, the story of Kevin is heartbreaking and chilling. I couldn't get my mind off this book days after I finished listening! I watched the movie a couple of days after and I believe they did a very good job at telling the story; like another reviewer, I would recommend reading/listening first and then watching the film.

This collection features a menagerie of horror stories. Some are scary. Some are disturbing. Some are funny. Meet werewolves, vampires, zombies, psychopaths, aliens, cannibals, ghosts, and various things that go bump in the night. Previously published in dozens of anthologies and magazines, some of these tales are mild, but some are extreme. Let the reader beware...

Some great, some not so much.
Revisado: 05-14-12
This collection starts out very strong. The first few stories are great, particularly a vampire tale read in a very convincing british accent. However, at a certain point I found the quality very uneven. I am not a prude when it comes to reading dark fiction - I actually enjoy blood and guts and I have a very strong stomach, but some of the tales lapse into grossness for the sake of grossness. Dare I say "potty humor"? Close to it. I actually had to turn one of them off.
I would recommend this overall for any fans of horror with a dark comedy edge. There were times I laughed out loud. But just know that, like most anthologies, not every story is up to snuff. So even if you skip a couple here and there, you will still end up entertained in the end because there are plenty of stories here and you get your credit's worth of listening. Don't skip the vampire story - I believe it is the 2nd or 3rd one.

Revisado: 05-22-11
This is a great preamble for those who have not watched The Thing or The Thing From Another World. Or those who have to give you greater insight. It's amazing how this story is so ahead of its time and how it still holds one enthralled. A great, tight little SF thriller that will hold your interest until the end. Highly recommended!
