Paula Gooder talks on a difficult question that is commonly asked: how should we read the Bible? Unfortunately, there is no Bible-reading formula that makes it easy - it is frustrating and challenging. Yet it is also exhilarating, inspiring, and transforming, so we should make sure we understand it better and avoid some classic pitfalls.

Closing with the Enemy picks up where D-Day leaves off. From Normandy through the "breakout" in France to the German army's last gasp in the Battle of the Bulge, Michael D. Doubler deals with the deadly business of war - closing with the enemy, fighting and winning battles, taking and holding territory. His study provides a provocative reassessment of how American GIs accomplished these dangerous and costly tasks.

Day to Day Combat on the Ground
Revisado: 01-29-12
Finally a book which talks about how the army fought the war. But unlike most books which talk from 60,000 feet up, this book talks at ground level. It talks on combat strategy and how they adjusted their fighting approaches given the circumstances.
The book deals with fighting in the bocage, city fighting, river crossings, bunkers, etc. How they fought and solved problems. How ground, artillery, armor and air power learned to work together and how the process evolved over time. The book explains in detail the challenges and the conflicts with old thinking taught in training manuals that had to be adjusted or tossed out completely

Historia
When Truman asked Stalin in 1945 whether Hitler was dead, Stalin replied bluntly, "No." As late as 1952, Eisenhower declared: "We have been unable to unearth one bit of tangible evidence of Hitler's death." What really happened? Simon Dunstan and Gerrard Williams have compiled extensive evidence - some recently declassified - that Hitler actually fled Berlin and took refuge in a remote Nazi enclave in Argentina.

Good but not Great
Revisado: 11-30-11
While this book does a good job presenting a story based on many interviews. It is presented as a story. So one misses the research side of things, that is the story of their research process. And while names are mentioned, there wasn't enough time spent on the people they talked to. Also there was a lot of time spent on basic WW2 history, which wasn't really necessary for the book.
It's worth listening to and they do make a compelling story.

Generals - Yes ... Average Soldiers - No
Revisado: 05-22-10
Shaara does a great job with Generals and statesmen. But when the story jumps away to tell a soldiers story, it just doesn't have the same impact as the dialog the Generals speak. The soldier parts are almost forgettable, where the Generals seem to have better lines.

Historia
William "Wild Bill" Guarnere and Edward "Babe" Heffron were among the first paratroopers of the U.S. Army - members of an elite unit of the 101st Airborne Division called Easy Company. Arguably the bravest, most efficient, physically fit, and tight-knit group of soldiers the Army has ever produced, the unit was called upon for every high-risk operation of the war, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden in Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden.

Travel back with the characters
Revisado: 03-01-08
This is why audio books are better than reading. Once you get into the first chapter and the "reader" goes into character, you will think this book is actually being read by Bill and Babe, back in time. If fact it sounds like they are telling you their story, and nothing is being read. The reader truly makes this book come alive!

Historia
The post-Normandy battles that the Allies fought as they struggled for seven months to advance from the Seine to the Rhine were complex and controversial. Even after 60 years, the questions remain of who was responsible for the failure at Nijmegen, the destruction of the British First Airborne Division at Arnhem, and the failure of Operation Market Garden. Could the war in Europe have been won in 1944 with better strategies?

Balanced and informative
Revisado: 09-08-07
I enjoyed the book. We've been spoon feed how Monty was the big bad buggy man for so long. This author gives a balanced look at things. But Monty is not the focal point of the book, like some of the other reviewers would make you think. There is much to take away. This book is basically a samplier pack of the major pushes after normandy.

A modern master of the historical novel, Jeff Shaara has painted brilliant depictions of the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and World War I. Now he embarks upon his most ambitious epic, a trilogy about the military conflict that defined the 20th century. The Rising Tide begins a staggering work of fiction bound to be a new generation's most poignant chronicle of World War II.

Good but not Great
Revisado: 08-25-07
I was hoping for a story about the soldier. While there is a dusting of storyline regarding their story. It is for the most part a Rommel, Patton, Ike, and Monty storyline. The reader is fantastic, he changes his voices to cover several German characters, several American, and several British.
I found the story alive and interesting when it dealt with generals and above. The soldier parts were short and weak.
