Historia
War has come to Discworld...again. And, to no one's great surprise, the conflict centers around the small, insufferably arrogant, strictly fundamentalist duchy of Borogravia, which has long prided itself on its ability to beat up on its neighbors. This time, however, it's Borogravia that's getting its long-overdue comeuppance, which has left the country severely drained of young men.

great narrator but very little story
Revisado: 09-18-24
I completely recommend this one over the new version because this narrator is great and a lot more humor comes through. however, they're just isn't much to the story. you have to get past the halfway point before things start getting a little interesting but then it just sort of fizzles out. there are some interesting ideas presented in here, some different takes on war and gender equality since the premise is that The protagonist is a woman who enlists in the army and pretends to be a man. But after the story begins and she joins, there isn't a whole lot that happens and you can't really see what's at stake or where things are going until after the halfway point and even then it's sort of bland. this is probably my least favorite discworld book. I would listen while driving, and then my mind would start wandering, and then I'd come back to listening again and not feel like I missed anything important so why wouldn't even bother rewinding.

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

A book for fans, wrong narrator
Revisado: 01-12-20
Christopher Lee is awesome, but not right for this book. He reads it like a noble lord recounting a tale of heroism, which gets old and dry. There's really no emotion in the telling and the characters mostly come across with the same personalities. The story itself... there's some great moments, parts stay very interesting, but overall, not captivating like the Hobbit or LOTR. In the end, I wouldn't have regretted skipping this one.

Historia
"Vimes' prompt arrival got a nod of approval from Sybil, who gingerly handed him a new book to read to Young Sam. Vimes looked at the cover. The title was The World of Poo. When his wife was out of eyeshot he carefully leafed through it. Well, okay, you had to accept that the world had moved on and these days fairy stories were probably not going to be about twinkly little things with wings."

It's just a story about a boy who collects poo.
Revisado: 12-23-19
There are some clever bits in the beginning, some nice observations about the excrements from all of us, but once the story gets going there's really not much story. It really is just about a boy going around collecting poo and meeting people involved in related industries. But it's short and pleasant.

Historia
When Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan, comes to stay with his Uncle Jonathan, he expects to meet an ordinary person. But he is wrong. Uncle Jonathan and his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both witches! Lewis is thrilled. At first, watching magic is enough. Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard. It seems that Serenna and her husband built a timepiece into the walls - a clock that could obliterate humankind. And only the Barnavelts can stop it!

Story had some pieces that could have built an interesting world but it never got there. At half the length it would have been a fun simple kids book.

Historia
The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth.

Enjoyable enough to finish, but movie wins
Revisado: 03-31-19
The movie (13th Warrior) was the concise version that this should have been. It's a good book, but long for what it was. The movie really is the book, same story, events, drama, but less wordy. Interesting experiment in treating this as an academic analysis of a first hand account from long ago, but it just didn't work for me and often distracted from the pace of the story.

Historia
Deep is a voyage from the ocean's surface to its darkest trenches, the most mysterious places on Earth. Fascinated by the sport of freediving - in which competitors descend to great depths on a single breath - James Nestor embeds with a gang of oceangoing extreme athletes and renegade researchers. He finds whales that communicate with other whales hundreds of miles away, sharks that swim in unerringly straight lines through pitch-black waters, and other strange phenomena.

Shocking, intriguing, thrilling, and interesting
Revisado: 08-06-18
When I first began listening, I thought I may want to try freediving - then he described a competition he attended and the blackouts, noses/mouths gushing blood, and occasional deaths. The book alternates between what freediving is and the science it can support. Some research, whale and dolphin expeditions he joins, for example, can only be done by freedivers without noisy/clunky SCUBA equipment. I learned a lot about ocean life, science, biology, and the culture of freediving from pearl divers to competitions.

1st half story, 2nd half useful
Revisado: 08-06-18
It's a good book. I found his story of confronting rejection fairly interesting, though a bit long. The real value of the book lies in the last half where he explains what he's learned. You'll find some great insight on interacting with people, taking chances, making sales, negotiating and life in general.
