Historia
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

The story was great, unlike many other that flood the genre, but just as important for me was the authors note. This book was such a time capsule, in a way I didn’t think I could appreciate. As an essential worker, with a daughter considered high risk, we were lucky to never bring Covid home. It was, however, a constant worry, until easily until mid 2021. The way Covid was approached made me enjoy the story more. In 2025, it feels like it should be acknowledged more, just because it was such a significant period in our world that affected everything. I’m looking forward to checking out more of Karen Slaughter’s books!

Historia
Recruited into the fundamentalist Quiverfull movement as a young wife, Tia Levings learned that being a good Christian meant following a list of additional life principles—a series of secret, special rules to obey. Being a godly and submissive wife in Christian Patriarchy included strict discipline, isolation, and an alternative lifestyle that appeared wholesome to outsiders. Women were to be silent, “keepers of the home.” A Well-Trained Wife is an unforgettable memoir about a woman's race to save herself and her family and details the ways that extreme views can manifest in a marriage.

This is one I’m going to keep with me forever. Growing up Baptist, some parts of this book stung more than others. My life didn’t follow the same path, but not because I was strong enough to assert myself, just simply because I had more than just my “church family”, and I met someone outside the church.
I came upon this book by way of instagram, more specifically one post that one friend shared. That one share led me to download this book in the middle of the night, when I should have been sleeping. It brought up a lot of memories and emotions, but also gave me a much needed cry. It’s one of few books I’ll be buying a physical copy of as well, and I’m happy to contribute to Tia’s travel fund while doing so.

Historia
Veronica and Ryan Hartley are the envy of Auburn Drive. When the exclusive neighborhood hosts its annual progressive dinner party, the couple’s perfection is on display. The neighbors are obsessed—entranced by the “it” couple’s movie-star looks and smoldering gazes. But is the perfect pair too good to be true?

Great short story

Rather predictable, but that doesn’t detract at all from the quality storytelling. I especially liked the format of the story, being told from different characters in this way.

The school shooting section…yikes
Revisado: 07-23-22
Active shooter drills in schools are horrifying and traumatic for children. They’re also saving countless lives by preparing them for the worse case (and sadly, increasingly common) scenario. The author of a book DEVOTED to the topic of preparedness should, of all people, recognize that. I’d be willing to bet more people in the US will benefit from knowing the best active shooter practices than will need to know which booze makes hair shiniest. To listen to the author carry on about how unnecessarily traumatic active shooter drills are was painful, especially after so many stories of combat zones and dangerous parts of the world. The comparisons made to the “duck and cover” drills in the 50’s and 60’s was even more infuriating. Climbing under a desk isn’t going to save anyone from an atomic bomb, but learning to be perfectly silent when someone bangs on your classroom door keeps kids and teachers alive. To compare the two is dangerously out of touch with the threats our children experience each year,
I’m trying to give the benefit of the doubt that the author has had a change of opinion on active shooter drills in schools since this book was published. Unfortunately, it wasn’t published too horribly long ago, so I don’t have much hope.

Historia
Bert Kreischer doesn't know how to say "no." If he did, he wouldn't have gotten himself mixed up with a group of Russian mobsters on a class trip to Moscow, earning him his nickname: "The Machine." He wouldn't have wrestled with a bear or swum with sharks on national television. He wouldn't have (possibly) smoked PCP with a star of Saturday Night Live. And he wouldn't have been named the Number One Partier in the Nation by Rolling Stone, inspired the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder, or performed standup to sellout crowds across the country.

I mean...
Revisado: 01-29-21
If you’re familiar with/like Bert, you’re going to love this audiobook. I truthfully don’t know if I ever would have picked up a paper copy of it, but hearing him stop in the middle of a paragraph to complain about his pants or cackle like an idiot was exactly why I knew I needed to listen to this as soon as I saw it existed. Was NOT disappointed, and I’ll probably listen again even.
