This book has inside stories that I have not heard before about the various space programs from the very beginning up to the end of the Apollo missions. Gene has a great way with words, which makes it easy to imagine what it must have been like going through all of the stages of the programs.

What would have made Pirate Latitudes better?

The story was disjointed and campy. My guess was an outline was created with maybe 12-15 points and everything else was fluff to get to the points - and then they were quickly and predictidly run through. This book should just not have been published.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I have a number of backlogged books. I will probably listen to The Periodic Table next.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was pretty disappointed with this book. To this point I have like Michael Crichton novels, but clearly this was completely out of his realm.

Any additional comments?

I would advise skipping this novel. It was just poorly written.

Where to begin...
The story is not believable. In some of the simplist of dialogs you are expected to just accept certain things that in the real world would just not happen.
I don't know if there is supposed to be a "Part II", but the ending was, well, pretty darn poor.
There are a number of unexplained subplots that were not explored past a certain point.
The characters are either cheesy or unbelievable.
I couldn't recommend this book to anyone. I have read some of Mr. Preston's other books and this work is poor in comparison.

There are lots of historical references (I did not verify), but it seems some of the opinions expressed were a bit off the wall and incomplete. Being fiscally conservative and anti-big government, the book is a good read (listen) but doesn't ring well with the conclusions. Question government motivations and question the thought processes and conclusions of this book.
