Meh
Revisado: 03-14-24
This story is kinda like a bag of chips. You open the bag, getting a wiff of a treat you know will not be very filling but can satisfy a craving, The longer you consume these books, the more crumby it becomes. At the end I was just blazing through at x3.5 speed since that's what the author decided to do.

Bored now.
Revisado: 10-15-22
The magic system is as deep as a thimble and as complicated as 1+1. Overpowered characters appear and I'm struggling to care. The characters are as fleshed out as the magic system.
All in all, I was hoping for this book to be better, but meh. If you enjoy a book that feels kinda slice of life with piss poor DBZ characters at the end, then this book is for you.

Alright
Revisado: 04-21-21
Didn't hate the book, but was not enraptured by it either. It was a decent listen yet the vast majority of the middle is just waiting for the people to try doing 1 thing for multiple chapters. It's an important thing but it is kinda boring.

The battlefield realm: a realm where sects rise and fall. Where the ground trembles under the feet of fighters from the higher realms. Where riches are gained and empires lost. This is where Erik and Rugrat must go, if they want to increase their strength and the strength of Alva. They say that fortune favors the bold. This is the ten realms. To the victor go the spoils. The fourth realm will change their lives...or end them.

Stop telling and show
Revisado: 03-28-20
This book has so many passages of just descriptive exposition and retellings of what has already been established that the narrative is trying my patience.
I'm also getting tired of Eric just being right all the time. Sure he was part of the military but not a large scale wartime general. This world has different rules but he keeps getting away with being better because the author can't challenge them legitimately.

Things Happen
Revisado: 03-23-20
Nothing really happens in this book. No main antagonistic force is discovered. No threats exist for the good guys even really stand a chance. Sure there was a point where the healers were in trouble but it was sorted out with no problem.
Also a major problem is that the author tells us everything that happens. Like in the last hour of the book there is a financial break down of what the good guys are spending on their Sim City. Anytime there is an important character introduced you can be sure there is most likely a group gossiping about that individual within earshot of the narrative character.
On the more SPOILER side, Ruggrat is bummed he can't use mana for half the book. Eric with basically no problem aces the Alchemy Exam. Another dick tries to hinder Eric but gets his comeuppance. A nation threatening force is easily, maybe even laughably, dealt with by the 'good guys.' So basically things just happen.

Historia
The Fortress that the Station Core had constructed was completely destroyed following a particularly brutal attack by superior forces - but they had won, albeit by the skin of their teeth. Unfortunately, the force that had attacked him on his home turf was only a very small portion of those heading inevitably closer to the Kingdom’s border. But will the efforts be enough to save everyone? Only the brave actions of the Proctans - and Milton’s Combat Units, of course - will determine that, as various plans come to fruition as The Kingdom rises.

A waste of potential
Revisado: 02-27-20
This story has little in the way of thoughtful use of its own Scifi elements. Items that are used in the story that could be used creatively aren't even thought of or mentioned. Much of the tech have absurd limits on them that it is clear that Brooks has no idea how they should work.
Laser turrets with a range of 150 ft?
Rail guns that can only accurately shoot 400ft?
Not wanting to build a cybernetic factory to make terminators?
Using a guy on a "Qwagon" to scout instead of UAV's?
Seriously lackluster stuff. Not to mention that the numbers go off the deep end in this book. 600,000 Con...? What absurd metrics are going on here? Is there an underlying system actually in place or is just fiat?
Obviously if you like understanding how the underlying systems work I can't recommend this book to you. If you are a purveyor of cringe, then I recommend this book to you. The voice acting is good though.

What are the rules?
Revisado: 01-08-20
I just cannot figure out the rules to this magic system it just keeps fluctuating on the feel of them. The costs of skills in the fight seem arbitrary, the stats seem arbitrary when the plot demands it, characters can unlock super powerful skills somehow, and beasts in beast zones can just continue to can power after they have been killed.
The bad guys just are super good at doing things when the plot demands, like sneaking. Many homeless people go missing and there is no one in that city putting the pieces together, not even another homeless person? I guess no one has enough INT to figure out any plan that the Pinnicale King makes.
If you can turn your brain off it can be an interesting book, but this entire series has fundamental problems that just keep me from really enjoying them.

Beware the mighty Lopen
Revisado: 10-12-19
A great continuation of the Mistborn series though one thing that amused me was the voice of Wade being the same as Lopen from the Stormlight Archive. It made me wish Sanderson to write a short story of those 2 meeting.

Great first book
Revisado: 07-27-19
This tale of redemption has great world building and a fleshed out magic system. The story is good but after hearing the main character dump on himself continuously it starts to get a bi et old. There are also a lot of he said, she said, and characters says in this book so that gets old after listening after a while. The voice work is really jarring though when characters are voiced by the other reader after having been voiced by the other.
I would have thought the cast would have been divided in half since there were 2 readers here, but no. Whenever it is a male perspective Michael reads and when a female perspective then Kate reads. This leads to wildly different voices for a character.
Overall the book is a good listen and I recommend it but be prepared for some drag.
