Historia
The term "sleeping dictionary" was coined for young Indian women who slept with British men and educated them in the ways of India. Set between 1925 and the end of World War II, The Sleeping Dictionary is the story of Kamala, born to a peasant family in West Bengal, who makes her way to Calcutta of the 1930s. Haunted by a forbidden love, she is caught between the raging independence movement and the British colonial society she finds herself inhabiting.

Historia
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

Revisado: 01-29-20
OH MY GOODNESS! This amazing book follows the life of one woman from slavery through emancipation and finally reconstruction. There is not one second of this amazing story in which I thought "oh! get on with it!" From the beautiful descriptions and language through the narrators perfect story telling, this novel kept me wanting to listen. Truly a masterpiece of American literature.

Historia
Perhaps no group was more surprised by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's swift and largely unopposed rise to power than the Brotherhood itself; for decades, the group had suffered a long history of severe oppression and internal crises, but in the political environment created by the Arab Spring, it only took less than two years for the Brotherhood to control the Egyptian government. As it turned out, it was Islamists who reaped the greatest advantages of the Arab Spring, not only in Egypt, but abroad as well.

it would have been so much better if there were a different narrator. when I was able to get past the narrator, the content was interesting enough.

Historia
On New Year's Eve in 2012, Matthew Schrier was headed home from Syria, where he'd been photographing the country's civil war. Just 45 minutes from the safety of the Turkish border, he was taken prisoner by the al-Nusra Front. Over the next seven months he would endure torture and near starvation in six brutal terrorist prisons. And, eventually, he would escape. In this gripping, raw, and surprisingly funny memoir, Schrier details the horrifying and frequently surreal experience of being a slight, wisecracking Jewish guy held captive by the world's most violent Islamic extremists.

kept me guessing
Revisado: 11-17-18
I loved this book. It was very touching and moving, yet also made me smile. The characters were fairly realistic. I really enjoyed that the narrators Sounded as if they really came from India and the pronunciation was good. The book kept me guessing and there were even surprises to me, but perhaps I was just naive. So many of these stories are so very sad and it kept me guessing to the very end.
