The poor voices of some of the characters
Revisado: 11-29-24
The story was good enough to get past the almost comical different characters voices. The combat scenes were intense and riveting. I was a WESTPAC sailor twice over back in Reagan's navy. Brought back fond memories.

Nothing to dislike. All narrators were good. My personal opinion is that the Bible should be narrated by men, such as the New Testament since it was written (with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) by men.

For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

The story meanders. I gave the story four stars. I'm glad I brought the audiobook because the book ends abruptly. To be fair, what more could be said. Two old friends. One took the low road.

Historia
The island of Iwo Jima was the epic land and sea battle that produced one of the iconic images of WWII: the Marines raising the American flag on Mount Surabachi, an active volcano that was the site of intense hand to hand combat. In this gripping novel, P. T. Deutermann follows a young gunnery liaison officer, Lee Bishop, who during the ferocious battle for the island is pulled from his station aboard the USS Nevada to serve onshore as a spotter, calling in coordinates for the ship to target with missiles.

The valor, and the horror
Revisado: 02-20-24
IWO, 26 CHARLIE is another remarkably good effort by P. T. Deuterman. It captures the absolute horror, the murderous conditions, that existed in the battle for Iwo Jima in the Pacific during WWII. Deutermann thrusts you into the heart of the bloody battle, one that military planners expected would last for a few days, but ended up lasting for weeks. The novel details the exploits of a young naval officer, Lee Bishop, who volunteers to link up with the marines on Iwo and help them set up a grid network for calling in naval artillery bombardments. He gets a lot more than he bargained for when his duties ultimately take him behind enemy lines. He links up with some colorful marine infantrymen—Goon, Twitch, and Monster—and ends up fighting for his life in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese. The book not only carries you deep into combat, but details the technology, physics, and math needed to direct naval gunfire from ship to shore. Warfare isn’t always about just direct combat. Bottom line: If you want a WWII novel that will keep you truly engrossed, IWO, 26 CHARLIE is for you.

Historia
March 19, 1945: The war in the Pacific approaches its apocalyptic climax. The largest wartime armada ever assembled, Task Force 58, is closing in on Okinawa; once taken, it will finally put American B-29 bombers in range of the home islands of Japan - and victory. Trial by Fire is the gripping novelization of how, against all odds, the sailors of the Franklin were able to save their ship, after three agonizing days of battling the flames that ultimately claimed the lives of 832 men and injured 300 more.

The Captain
Revisado: 02-10-24
Incredible---Deutermann at his best!!!!!!
A compelling and inspirational story of the men on the USS Franklin and how they survived a catastrophic kamikaze attack that nearly sank their ship and killed hundreds. (Actually, this was the second attack that the Franklin had suffered.) Three characters are well developed throughout the novel and drive the story. Several others are in the mix, ---describing the efforts of the crew’s survival after the devastation of the attack. Well done! Am in awe at their efforts.
Two additional items: Some reviews have criticized Deutermann for the wealth of information detailing how a carrier functions and how difficult it is to ‘execute damage control’ once it is disabled. However, the descriptions give the reader an appreciation of the massive scale of a fleet carrier and the overlapping/convoluted challenges that confronted the crew. If it is too much, a reader could just skip the details, but they would miss so much of the depth to the story. I loved it and I am techno geekless!
Finally, having finished the book, I wanted to know more about the skipper of the Franklin and if his performance was a bad as it was described. I consulted three alternate sources about the incident. They confirmed Deutermann’s description leaving me with a question---how did such a malevolent, ineffective and vindictive officer ever retire from the navy as a rear admiral? Why do we reward our worst?
Read the book! If you enjoy WW II novels--it will blow you away!

Historia
With his cold, steely-eyed focus on killing Japanese ships, Malachi Stormes is an enigma to his officers and crew - especially when it becomes clear he is willing to take huge chances to achieve results. Firefish sinks more ships than any Perth boat on her first war patrol, but Stormes’ unconventional tactics literally frighten his crew. His crew members are proud of their boat’s accomplishments but wonder if their iron-willed skipper will bring them home alive.

Book Review of The Iceman, by P.T. Deutermann
A Thrilling Submarine Tale
Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2018
Author P.T. Deutermann has written a thrilling story about submarine warfare in the Pacific.
Lieutenant Commander Malachi Stormes has made a reputation for himself in the European theater. As commander of an aging American S-boat, he managed to sink three German U-Boats emerging from a minefield. Now, Malachi has been transferred to Perth, Australia, and given command of the submarine USS Firefish. In the early stages of the Pacific war, the American fleet submarines were the primary tools used at hitting back at the Japanese fleet. Malachi and his untested crew have now been thrust into the forefront as an attack boat.
Throughout the course of the story, Malachi slowly converts his crew into a group of fearless (and somewhat apprehensive) men who thrive on sinking enemy ships. The scores begin to roll up as the Firefish begins to terrorize Japanese shipping. But the boat is plagued by ineffective torpedoes as well as some of the men who believe Malachi is too aggressive. But the results cannot be ignored.
Malachi is soon dubbed the Iceman for his detached personality and his sole desire to kill the Japanese. Although the Firefish has become one of the highest scoring boats in the fleet, will Malachi be able to overcome his Iceman persona?
"The Iceman" is a fine book and Deutermann has written a tale that accurately depicts the state of the American submarine force early in the war. It is true that American submarines were plagued with faulty torpedoes that either failed to explode or ran too deep. This narrative is constant throughout the book. Also, the story of life in port after a patrol is well-described, with Malachi falling in love with a pretty Australian doctor. Deutermann even subtly mentions (not by direct name) some of America's greatest submarine skippers, including Dudley "Mush" Morton and Richard "Dick" O'Kane.
I give this fine book my highest recommendation. Deutermann has written a great fictional submarine tale that accurately depicts early American submarine warfare in the Pacific.

An American Indian from a Minnesota reservation, Wolf has never fit in with the traditional navy officer corps. But under Halsey, Wolf's aggressive tactics and gambling nature bring immediate results.

Lots of action. Brought a tear to my eyes when I realized our WOKE Navy could never fight anyone like a real antagonist like the Imperial Japanese Navy. We don't have an Admiral Halsey or Commodore "Sluff!"

Historia
In late 1944, America’s recapture of the Philippines is jeopardized by what seems an insurmountable threat from Japan: immense Yamato-class battleships, which dwarf every other ship at sea. Built in total secrecy, these 76,000-ton warships seem invincible. American military intelligence knows of two such ships, but there are rumors of a third, built not as a battleship but as an aircraft carrier. Now ready to go operational from Japan’s heavily defended and mined Inland Sea, a carrier of that size could disrupt the entire invasion effort.
