I’m on my third translation of The Odyssey and this Fitzgerald translation has the most elegant clarity and would be my vote for the first version to listen to. BEAUTIFULLY read with a solid pace that never lags, and adds to Homers drama. It’s no wonder that this Fitzgerald translation has been the gold standard for so many years

Gorgeous blending of a true life father and son story and Homers Odyssey. The author, a noted classics scholar, had his elderly father audit his college lecture on The Odyssey. This event launches the author deep into his own odyssey with his father and his families history. The mix of Daniel, his father, and the young students in the class as they explore Homer is very special. Father and son decide to take an Odyssey boat cruise which allow Mr Mendelssohn to explore Homer even more. I wonderful family story leavened with this great masterpiece of literature makes this a unique book. Beautifully read, VERY enjoyable

A wonderful, entertaining book, beautifully read by the author. While the book is in general chronological order each chapter is virtually standalone and the book can be read in any order. The stories are AMAZING, Wolf seems to have known or at least encountered EVERYBODY, the list is insane, starting with Marylin Monroe and ending with Merle Haggard. The author has tended to take himself out of the stories and present them more as an observer. The book is certainly not a typical autobiography and is refreshing as such. I think if you are music person you might enjoy the book a bit more then a non-music buff but I think anyone will enjoy this funny and fascinating book by one of the worlds great raconteurs.

My third translation, there is no “best” so every translation is different. I think this is the richest. Parts of the work can be somewhat tiresome; the battles and the inventory of the ships but the arc of the story if profound and moving so well worth the journey. Very nicely read

As a financial professional (CPA) on the verge of retirement after 30+ years in practice I found this book very helpful. I utilized several specific suggestions right away and my wife and I have discussed others, a must read for anyone nearing retirement. This book brings up all the salient thinks you need to think about.

This book accomplishes its goal, an overview on which any single topic could be (and most certainly is, multiple volumes). As an uninformed reader it gave me a much needed framework for further exploration. An easy to follow book and very well read.

By using the history of the 20th century Snyder has outlined 20 simple lessons on what tyranny looks like, how it functions in the world at what we need to do about it, bracing, sobering and ultimately very sad.

Mr. Kotkin has boiled a bunch of history down to 5.5 hours so the material is dense and fascinating. Found myself relistening to parts of it multiple times to understand his interpretation. Not sure this is a book for folks unfamiliar with the general history as there is little background, narrative or specific exposition of the events. It is essentially a fast moving overview of the historical events along with Kotkin's interpretation of their meaning. In the hands of someone lesser this would be a problem but here we are guided by one of the great experts on Russian history so it is very worthwhile

Excellent history partially built on the recent internal documents the Chinese have allowed to be released and many in person interviews. Clearly years of a tremendous amount of scholarly research at work here. The problem is that Mao is such a monumentally odious person that the book at times just becomes a slog of one despicable action after another. This, of course is not the problem of the authors or the book but the man they are writing about seems utterly without any redeeming qualities. The dynamics of Mao and Chinas relationship with Russia (and Stalin) are fascinating.
Nicely read and very listenable

The book dips back into Trotskys fall and banishment from Russia as well as his relationship with both Lenin and Stalin but largely the book concerns his time in Mexico. We learn a lot of his relationship with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo and of course his ultimate murder by Stalin. The book has an excellent post script on what became of the various players in the story.
