Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Good data, bad narrative
Revisado: 07-24-24
The first part of the book included fascinating data on nuclear weapons, their effects and the systems and protocols established around them. Interviews with experts were also interesting. However, the nuclear war scenario presented by the author is weak and more than a little sloppy. The book devolves into a lurid display of macabre prose. No thank you.

Not Ludlum’s best
Revisado: 06-22-24
Plot had far too many implausibles. Reader was melodramatic; he had, however, an impressive array of accents (French not being one of them, neither that of France nor Canada).

Historia
At the end of the fifteenth century, Burgundy was extinguished as an independent state. It had been a fabulously wealthy, turbulent region situated between France and Germany, with close links to the English kingdom. Torn apart by the dynastic struggles of early modern Europe, this extraordinary realm vanished from the map. But it became the cradle of what we now know as the Low Countries, modern Belgium and the Netherlands. This is the story of a thousand years, a must-listen narrative history of ambitious aristocrats, family dysfunction, treachery, savage battles, luxury, and madness.

Excellent book; terrible reader
Revisado: 01-22-24
I was so happy to find this book as it squarely fits my areas of interest. It is superbly written. Sadly, the reader is so aloof and disconnected from the material that it is rendered nearly lifeless.

Historia
Throughout medieval Europe, for hundreds of years, monarchy was the way that politics worked in most countries. This meant power was in the hands of a family - a dynasty; that politics was family politics; and political life was shaped by the births, marriages, and deaths of the ruling family. Drawing on a rich and memorable body of sources, this engaging and original history of dynastic power in Latin Christendom and Byzantium explores the role played by family dynamics and family consciousness in the politics of the royal and imperial dynasties of Europe.

First impression
Revisado: 03-14-22
The content is excellent (as one would expect from Bartlett) but the reader is close to insufferable. Cowley reads in a monotone, almost comically missing inflections in the text as though he’s reading it for the first time. It will be difficult to complete this book.
