A definitive study on the decades-long run of high public confidence in the military and why it may rest on some shaky foundations.

Great book overall, generally good narration but I I have to hear that the technical appendix is available at dataverse.harvard.edu/pfeaver any more times, I might swerve this car into oncoming traffic

Excellent overview, covering a wide array, but thematically linked topics. The Professor’s cadence and inflection make listening and staying engaged easy. 10/10 definitely recommend.

Sensationalist, Astrategic nonsense
Revisado: 10-08-24
From beginning to end, this podcast interview expressed unknown dynamics as established fact and ignored 8 decades of scholarship on nuclear weapons.
Anyone actually interested in nuclear strategy should avoid this podcast as it should be properly labeled as misinformation.

This book explores the dramatic difference between the Russian and US approach to warfare, which manifests itself across the whole spectrum of activities from art and the economy to the respective national cultures; illustrates the fact that Russian economic, military, and cultural realities and power are no longer what American "elites" think they are by addressing Russia's new and elevated capacities in the areas of traditional warfare, as well as cyberwarfare and space; and studies several ways in-depth in which the US can simply stumble into conflict with Russia and what must be done to avoid it.

Propaganda
Revisado: 01-14-21
It’s difficult to get through even the introduction without being appalled by the ahistorical and supremely anti-American slant of this book.
Instead of building any type of academic argument, the book simply repeats tropes of the loud American while repeating extolling the virtues of Russia. It cannot so much as mention anything Russia without adding hyperbolic claims (Tolstoy’s War & Peace is “the greatest piece of prose ever written” or the Russian Army is “the only force capable of defeating the US military”).
All in all, this book is not worth the price... and it’s free.

Featuring a foreword by Dr. Jerrry Pournelle, A History of Strategy: From Sun Tzu to William S. Lind begins with the Chinese military literature, then reviews the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine works before proceeding to the Middle Ages. From Machiavelli and Montecuccoli to Guibert and Frederick the Great, van Creveld chronicles the gradual transition from medieval to Napoleonic warfare and onward into the nuclear age and the rise of ISIS.

Terrible narration destroys scholarly work
Revisado: 12-13-19
This wide reaching and in-depth consideration of the strategic masters is under cut by perhaps the worst near ration I’ve heard since joining Audible several years ago.
The narrators many mispronunciations and tortured phonics almost made this book indigestible. I can’t imagine that Dr. Martin van Creveld would be able to hear this narrator’s butchering of Jomini’s name without tearing his hair.

The number one problem facing many high school students: They haven’t been taught how to learn. Because our current educational system focuses on test results, few students are deliberately taught about learning - about developing the particular mind-set and using the specific skills that can help them graduate with exemplary grades and an exemplary mind.

Un-listenable
Revisado: 10-29-19
I’m sure that this great courses title is an excellent video for junior high students. But it’s simplified nature makes it a ridiculous lesson for anyone post-puberty.
Beyond that, as an audible selection it heavily relies on visual references that this platform simply doesn’t support.
If you have a motivated junior high student, this great courses series might suit them well. But as an audible selection as opposed to a video or for an older listener, it is utter garbage.

Brilliant Primer
Revisado: 11-15-17
As a military officer and student of strategy at the graduate level, I was familiar with many of the concepts at the outset, but this audiobook was gripping and engaging throughout.
It is the best commuting companion short of having Clausewitz join your morning carpool.
