Historia
Human history is full of the stories of peasants, subjects, and tribes. Yet the concept of the “citizen” is historically rare — and was among America’s most valued ideals for over two centuries. But without shock treatment, warns historian Victor Davis Hanson, American citizenship as we have known it may soon vanish.

Historia
When Americans think of modern warfare, what comes to mind is the US army skirmishing with terrorists and insurgents in the mountains of Afghanistan. But the face of global conflict is ever-changing. In Out of the Mountains, David Kilcullen, one of the world's leading experts on current and future conflict, offers a groundbreaking look at what may happen after today's wars end.

Kilcullen finally speaks his mind.
Revisado: 08-30-20
Kilcullen’s books are all insightful and important to the conversation of modern conflict. In previous books, it seems that he was dumbing down his brilliance to appeal to readers—if you want everyone to understand, make it a third grade reading level. This book, he seems to let loose a little more, giving a wild perspective to a man I’m glad is helping to solve our global security woes.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Great book
Revisado: 06-18-20
Great overall summary of the war from prewar to a quick summary of the post war negotiations. Most of the time is spent on 1916 and the shifting major fronts.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Historia
Though mankind has traded tangible goods for millennia, recent technology has changed the fundamentals of trade, in both legitimate and illegal economies. In the past three decades, the most advanced forms of illicit trade have broken with all historical precedents and, as Dark Commerce tells, now operate as if on steroids, tied to computers and social media. Author Louise Shelley examines how new technology, communications, and globalization fuel the exponential growth of dangerous forms of illegal trade and considers diverse ways of responding to this increasing challenge.

Good overview but too political
Revisado: 03-14-19
Example: the chapter on rhino horns doesn’t talk about the proposed solution of privatizing land and legalizing the rhino horn trade so that the owners of the private herds can make enough money for the preservation of the species. This is a reasonable solution that probably the most likely to work, but it isn’t suggested potentially because it is anti-big government/globalist. Also, the author hates on President Trump without going into why she is critiquing his decisions. Sorry, but his positions/decisions have merit worth discussion even if you ultimately disagree with them.

Historia
An old Chinese proverb says "Women hold up half the sky." Then why do the women of Africa and Asia persistently suffer human rights abuses? Continuing their focus on humanitarian issues, journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn take us to Africa and Asia, where many women live in profoundly dire circumstances.

False History
Revisado: 02-27-19
This book makes broad statements that terribly misrepresent history. It is full of glaring contradictions and doublethink. There are plenty of good stories to help further understand the plight of women in the developing world, and the book is good for that perspective, but just be careful and question the solutions offered. Just because an argument appeals to your heart, doesn’t make it true. Good job interviewing all the subjects, but leave the policy making to people who fully understand economics, policy development, rule of law principles, etc.
