Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Revisado: 03-31-25
I really enjoyed listening to this book. All the main characters were likable, the story telling was well worded and best of all? It didn't cause any stress.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

FUNNY, Enlightening and thoughtful
Revisado: 09-18-22
I have been watching Caitlin Doughty's YouTube channel for a long time. I generally don't enjoy audio books when they are narrated by the author. She does an amazing job. You need to be both sensitive to your own mortality and able to laugh at it... At the same time. I really recommend this one.

Historia
The small town of Bellamy Bay has its share of skeletons in its closet, but it isn't used to bodies turning up in the local history museum. After all, this Coastal North Carolina town is much like any other...except, of course, for the mermaids. Helping to run the family business, an herbal apothecary, while keeping her supernatural secret hidden is no easy feat for water witch Aleksandra Daniels. But somehow she's still found time to help her friend Celeste, who has her own Caribbean mermaid heritage, plan the annual Mermaid Festival.

Ugh, the narrator.
Revisado: 09-23-21
I'll make this fast.
1.The narrator sounds like she's reading to a group of 6 year old children. It's incredibly irritating. She switches words like companionable and compatible.
2. The main character constantly compares her boyfriend to her dad. It's a bit creepy.
3. The boyfriend is unsupportive and condescending. He infantilizes her. Everyone knows when a woman is mad you should just hug her and say 'there there'...... or not so much.
4. I'm not buying another.
A general observation:
Why oh why can't these books ever have a love interest that, ya know, believes in magic? Oh sure 4 books in they do but then there's always a break up because they can't handle it. THEN they get back together.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

It's nakedly honest and at times painfully real.
Revisado: 09-27-20
I bought it because it was on sale. I was so impressed. If you had a difficult childhood or parental relationship I can't recommend it enough. With honesty, a refreshing lack of sappiness or unnecessary drama he lays out his story. Sometimes healing is best done by walking away and defining yourself not by those dark and dominant forces that shaped you but instead by what and who you have chose, even if it's someone you have never met. It's not a denial of those forces or an unrealistic completely healed type of story. It's nakedly honest and at times painfully real. Most importantly it's relatable.

I have to admit that I love these books.
Revisado: 11-19-19
I have to admit that I love these books. They are fun and not too serious. My life is stressful and these books are great to relax my brain. I listen to them while I do household stuff, drive or play on the computer. They hold my interest without giving me a headache trying to follow anything overly complicated. Good mysteries too.

Historia
Known as The Mayor of Castro Street even before he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Harvey Milk's personal life, public career, and final assassination reflect the dramatic emergence of the gay community as a political power in America. It is a story full of personal tragedies and political intrigues, assassinations at City Hall, massive riots in the streets, the miscarriage of justice, and the consolidation of gay power and gay hope.

Best LGBTQ history you can get
Revisado: 11-19-19
Historically accurate! I first read this book when I was 16 and it blew my mind. It was my first encounter with gay history and I couldn't read it fast enough. As a young lesbian I was desperate for our history and I wasn't finding anything that predated the AIDs epidemic. Harvey Milk is my hero and so is Randy Shilts. I can't imagine how far we would have come if he hadn't been murdered. I am listening to it now, 24 years later, and am still in awe of the bravery of those gay men, drag queens and transgender folks. You might consider And the Band Played On by Randy Shilts for your next book or the HBO movie based on it.

I can no longer stand the main character, I'm done
Revisado: 11-19-19
I have a rule about when to stop reading a series: When I can no longer stand the main characters I'm done. I just hate Anita Blake now. Self centered, hypocritical and a just plain crappy person. I used to like the character. She was bold, smart and sexy. She just isn't likable anymore. Laurell K. Hamilton is now killing off the likability of other characters! Even sweet Nathaniel has become a petulant jerk. Anita Blake needs her job, life and depth back. Perhaps under 5 lovers just to make life easier for us to keep track. I miss the Anita Blake from Obsidian butterfly.

A mystery full of colorful characters (both two- and four-legged!), gorgeous country landscapes, timeless traditions, and the breathtaking thrill of the fox hunt. The fox has made short work of the henhouse and is wreaking havoc across the once-peaceful Virginia hunt country. As Master of the Hunt, "Sister" Jane Arnold, her gentleman friend Gray Lorillard, the members of the Jefferson Hunt Club, and their loyal, clever hounds confront a most challenging - and all-too-human - adversary.

Her narration is really bad. Read them instead.
Revisado: 08-12-19
I have read and loved Rita Mae Browns books for years. While hit or miss sometimes, it's always been worth it to hang in there. Her narration however is SO bad I won't buy anything further here. She stops frequently to swallow or what not. She has no different inflections for the different characters. With a cast of characters this large it makes your attendance drift away and you lose track of who or what is talking.

Historia
In the days before the Civil War, there lived in New Orleans the gens de couleur libre - copper-skinned half-castes, liberated by their "owners," but confined by their color to a life of political non-existence and social subordination. Here is a compelling and richly textured tale of a people forever caught in the shadows between black and white.
